Thought some of you might be interested. Really interesting find. Any thoughts on this one?

Well now that is quite the find, I am very skeptical however. I couldn't imagine something with such personal value to a family be up for sale, it just doesn't make sense to me.

It was probably originally sold through Steve at Farthest Reaches as he has been selling items for Wally and now his family for years. Check his website as there are plenty of awards and other documents for sale.

It's got his name on the back. Fakes usually are not engraved on the back.

From Wikipedia, not always a reliable source, has Wally and October 15, 1962 as his date for the medal, the medal shown has December 28, 1965.

Does anyone have a solid source to get the dates the medals where actually awarded, selected and what the date means?

It's possible the date on the medal is date presented while records show a different official date of selection.

The awards come with a certificate as well. I would think they would have been sold together.

Recently Wally’s son sold a Robbins medal that was on board Apollo 7 on eBay.

It might be possible to contact him through his eBay account and find out more.

Administrator Webb presented Schirra, Stafford, Borman and Lovell with Exceptional Service Medals at MSC on December 30, 1965. At the same ceremony, he also awarded Schirra a Distinguished Service Medal, a departure from NASA's plan to not award a DSM to any Gemini astronaut until the program's conclusion. The DSM was for Schirra's decision to not eject when the Titan shut down on Dec. 12.

The Wikipedia date is for the DSM he received for Mercury.

I received this from the seller:

Thank you for your email. I do not have a lot of provenance with this item (only verbal). Picked it up from an long time OMSA member (that came to a local Charlotte show) that stated he got it from and individual that received it from Wally prior to his passing. Sorry, no actual paperwork proving background or paperwork evidence of coming from Wally Schirra.

All times are CT (US)
