A non AB Emblem embroidered patch version of the Space Shuttle Program Commemorative Patch is now available on eBay for $5.99 with Buy It Now, from a seller in Merritt Island, Florida. He has 20 available to sell. |

Obviously a knock-off not authorized by Blake or NASA. It's also not the finished design - it shows the "30 Years" legend.Just someone trying to make a quick buck. Bad "captspace" bad boy! |

I think we should definitely open up a dedicated "topic" here and expose these parasites. "Fake patches" or something like that. |

Per NASA's own comments, the design still belongs to Blake Dumesnil and may not be reproduced for commercial purposes without his permission. |

Seller is Cape Kennedy Mint, owned by Jo and Tom Foley. They also carry a fake STS-132 patch. |

If indeed it is Cape Kennedy Mint, then all their patches are self-produced; to my knowledge, they do not stock AB Emblem patches. |

Even if the patch is a fake/fantasy, I must say for $5.99 plus four free official mission stickers and very low shipping it's not a bad deal. Whoever is running the eBay auctions is very fast to offer these embroidered patches. The description is certainly not 100% correct as this design did not win. Also 30 years is rather 29 years as it started in 1981 and probably ends 2010. In any case, the last shuttle mission is delayed til April 12, 2011 then the patch is correct. I notice that these patches, the particular 30 year patch 11 sold of 20, sold for a higher price than the actual so-called official AB Emblems. Collectors realize that the AB Emblems are mass produced and the fantasy/fake patches are probably much more limited. |

To the contrary, this design did win. The art was later altered by NASA for its own purposes, but the winning design did include the "30 Years" inscription. |

Sorry I must have seen the revised version in the patch section and was not aware of the actual winning design. |

Can Blake Dumesnil take legal action against the ebay seller captspace? The design being sold without permission is with no doubt Blake Dumesnil art/design. |

Even if copyright of the design would have tranfered to public domain, I believe that sketches (like the "30 years" version) are always copyrighted to the original designer. |

Jo and Tom Foley, now those names ring a bell. I am sure they have a shop near where Ken H. lives that sells patches and models. If it is them, they are getting on a bit and didn't seem to open up to the shop timetable. If it is them, they weren't the most reliable of suppliers when Rick and I tried to get stuff from them. |

I knew it. The ebay seller (captspace) has more than twenty 30 years commemorative patches available. Captspace just listed another 20 and the price is two bucks more with no more incentive = the four space stickers.Let's see if he can sell all 20 patches with no incentive for the higher price of $7.99 plus S1.50 ship. The original artist could use ebay's report an item feature. Maybe they listen to the copyright holder. |

Now, Foley's description includes: "Rumour has it that NASA will change the text on the patch making this a collectors item. This is a Limited Run." |

My prediction for the next two description updates:"Lawyers representing the legal owner of this design are knocking at the door. This is an even more limited run." Followed by... "I'm on the run." |

Anyone know when authentic versions of this sticker/patch will be available? I just love this design. |

captspace has revised his ebay auction. The old price of $5.99 is back plus the four stickers as an incentive. There was one buyer who purchased one at the higher price with no incentive. This buyer was probably misled by the word limited. I notice one problem with eBay auctions is that items are represented as "rare/limited" only to be seen later relisted over and over again. Of course the price of the "rare" item is getting cheaper and cheaper as seen with the STS-114 award medallion. Highest price at auction style was $350 and now the lowest approx. $95. That's a big difference. |

If you count 1981 as "Year 1," then 2010 becomes "Year 30." But if you go by the anniversary of the STS-1 launch as Day 1, then the 30th Anniversary isn't until April 12, 2011. Even still, if the last shuttle flight occurs before April 12, 2011, the spaceflight portion of the shuttle program will be in it's 30th year of operation (with 29 years completed and the 30th year in progress). Any shuttle launch after April 12, 2011 will technically be within the 31st year. |

In fact the shuttle program started much earlier. Had it started with... - the shuttle program was launched on January 5, 1972, when President Richard M. Nixon announced that NASA would proceed with the development of a reusable, low-cost Space Shuttle system.
- the first Enterprise landing tests in 1977
- the delivery of Columbia to KSC in 1979
I guess the shuttle program is much longer around than 30 years! |

Captspace is really fast. Now the STS-134 patch has been listed. This is not the official AB Emblem but rather a fantasy/fake patch. Tom F. Captspace does not seem to care about copyright holders. I just wonder if people use this report an item link that you can find inside the auction listing. So far his auctions have not been cancelled. By the way who designed the STS-134 patch?

He is only showing an image of the art. Clearly, the embroidered patches (listed as "official") are not ready yet, or the addition of the name "Endeavour" ("Endever" in the eBay description...) threw him off course a bit. |
