I've seen a signed picture for sale in the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's store for $200. This doesn't seem a huge fee in the scheme of things (compared to signing fees for a number of astronauts who are still with us and active on the signing circuit). Am I missing something here?

I think $200 sounds just about right...I know exactly where you're coming from in that he is no longer with us and so should be higher, although I think that the ASF will know what his autograph sells for on the open market, and doesn't want to put the price much higher than that to ward off potential buyers (for example I have seen his autograph sell for as low as $50 in places) but $200 does sound a decent price to me and the money is going to a good cause of course! |

In my opinion, $200 for a fairly common signed Schirra photo (which the two at the ASF site are) is a bit expensive, though one must figure in one's desire to donate money to the ASF when calculating the "value" of the purchase. If the price seems okay to you and you're happy to give the money to the ASF, go for it! Otherwise, similar signed photos have sold in the range of $50-120 since Wally's passing. Wally signed a lot of stuff during his career, so unless one has a particular uncommon or rare item signed (or a multi-signed item), you won't see prices go much higher.I know I had a signed vintage NASA glossy signed by Schirra (of him suited up on the day of his Mercury flight) up for auction for less than $100 that I couldn't generate any bids for...if that gives you any indication what his signature is going for these days (or isn't going for ). |

Thanks for the info, I'm not as familiar with going rates in the 'dealer' market (I know the ASF aren't a dealer as such) as I tend to prefer to get signatures in person, adds the personal touch, but obviously in some cases that isn't possible any more. So I guess I was just a bit surprised that the price for someone like him wouldn't be higher. Still better that than the other way round I suppose! |

Would suggest you visit FarthestReaches.com and browse the autographed Wally Schirra photos sorted by mission (Mercury, Gemini and Apollo). Think both the pricing and variety will be to your liking. |
