I have had an unusual experience on eBay whereby I won an unusual and very good space collectible for a bargain price of $16. The first moment that I felt things were a touch off was when the postage was calculated, $30 for airmail postage to Europe, for something that weighed no more than a small pamphlet. Anyway, I was stoked to get the item and paid the postage and item via PayPal the day the auction ended - it was within what I had budgeted so no harm done. Two weeks later and I'm expecting the item to arrive. Instead I check my email and notice an unpaid item claim has been filed with eBay, and that I am required to take urgent action. As two weeks had passed, and I had won several other items, I panicked and thought I managed to miss paying on the item. Not so. I have the confirmation email from PayPal, and when I go to the item's eBay listing it states clearly that it has been paid by PayPal. I don't quite see how someone could miss this, as even in "My eBay" it tells you if an item has been paid for if PayPal is used. So anyway, I fill out the appeal page including detailed description of the date paid, the amount paid, and even the PayPal transaction number. As of now, the case is still open - awaiting no less a response from the seller. This strikes me as bizarre. In the listing of the item the seller states they had a similar item sold a few years back for $100. I have a sneaking suspicion that something is not right. The seller deals with space related merchandise and I am concerned about this state of affairs. I have kept it fairly generic for now, as I am hoping that it is purely a simple error. Are there any thoughts or similar experiences anyone else may have had? |

I don't know if that's allowed (though I think since everybody can tell his experiences the way they are) but can you expose the seller to us here (or at least by email to me directly)? It sounds like an odd story indeed though I made bizarre experiences over the last 11 years on eBay as well (as a seller and buyer). I have experienced space collectors as a more than honest and fair crowd of people, more than many other collectors so odd stories like this are fortunately very very rare. In the more recent time I also made a couple of bad experiences on eBay like things were exchanged for other items of less quality or even autopens were sent instead of real autographs that are shown on the pics. These are criminals IMHO though they are indeed rare. Also as a word of caution to sellers: Sometimes buyers want to return items because they claim them not to be in perfect condition, when returned it turns out they replaced the article I sent with a damaged one (this often happens with electronics too and is a known problem on eBay). Often this happens with space stamps I sell on eBay... they return hinged or other missing-teeth stamps and not the one I sent. Also several people (unfortunately buyers from China and Russia are among them) try to negotiate the price down and threaten to file a PayPal claim if you don't agree. Unfortunately eBay and PayPal are very buyer orientated and rarely trust the facts you present them. Both companies (though they are one) seem to keep the impression in the public, that paying with PayPal is risk-free. But that's another story. Bottom line, we make bad experiences everywhere and again space memorabilia is still a very safe thing to deal on eBay and stories like these are very very rare. |

The other thing to watch out for is that there was a phishing scam last year with something similar. I got an email purportedly from eBay that I hadn't paid for an item, which was illustrated in the email. There was a click link in the email, which I didn't follow (thank goodness). I sent an email to eBay customer service about the mistaken item and they wrote back that this was a phishing scam. Turns out that link would have sent me to a site that was made to look like eBay but which would have undoubtedly tried to harvest my user info and passwords. |

You can always forward anything suspicious looking to spoof@ebay dot com or spoof@paypal dot com. Wait for a reply which usually does not take very long on these.Terry |

Turns out it was an error on the part of Paypal. That is what was throwing me, as I couldnt work out how the seller didnt see I had paid.Main thing is I'll be getting the item, and the seller got their money. Thanks for everyone's help. |

Great advise Terry, I use it all the time. LOTS of fraud email looks real, I forward to spoof@aol (or) ebay without hesitation. Jerry | |
