I know that there are a lot of great people on this forum affiliated with UACC and I mean no disrespect with this posting, but nowadays what value does the UACC offer to collectors? Consider my impressions of the UACC:

Many full-time eBay sellers who specialize in forged autographs claim to be members of the UACC as means to enhance their reputation.

What do you get for being a UACC member? I admit that I'm not a member, mainly because I have never felt a compelling reason to be one.

What does the UACC do? Again, I am at a loss in describing their mission activities, anything.

If I'm missing something please enlighten me but as of now I just don't see it.

Mike, I used to do business solely with UACC registered dealers, but they do not police themselves very well and after the fact may kick someone out, however I have asked several times the leadership about people they say have been booted but they never give an answer. Those who get booted are happy to talk to you and give their side. That's the registered dealer side, the bad is ANYONE can join and claim to be a member but.... oh that dreaded but... they do not police the membership so you are on your own.

I have gone to using only a couple of well known dealers and when it comes to our hobby I support the ASF as I know what I get is real. I use to think the UACC was a real great outfit but over the last two years I have seen them go down hill, on two occasions I bought from dealers online, got my order confirmed then told oh were sorry it was a mistake, then the piece I bought was on their websites and their own auctions a week later? So after my rambling I must say I think they have no more meaning then PSA, they both guarantee their products and both have been at fault.

I would say read all you can find and then use your judgment and accept the results! Sorry for the rant,

Lou

While I know some may swear by the UACC, I have seen little benefit (personally speaking) that the UACC currently offers for space autograph collectors. I personally don't look for UACC membership from a dealer before I buy, as it eliminates too many good dealers from the mix. It also seems that most of the reputable dealers who specialize in the space autograph hobby don't bother with registering with the UACC.

The best advice is to always evaluate each signature on it's own merits...appearance, provenance, etc...and not rely on a dealer's membership to an organization as a means to evaluate a potential purchase. And, of course, a dealer should always stand behind what they sell and offer a full refund in the case of a discovered forgery...regardless of whether they are a UACC dealer or not.

I think the UACC still has the ability to transform itself into an organization that could well serve collectors and dealers.

Consider the case of the Humane Society and what transpired yesterday in regards to eBay's decision to ban the sale of most ivory products. That change in policy was driven by an independent report generated by the non-profit Humane Society.

Imagine were the UACC to underwrite and/or organize a similar report about the status of forgery sales on eBay, underscoring the amount of money changing hands and the percentage of real to fake autographs being sold. If the total figures are what I suspect they might be, and were the UACC to generate similar media attention to what transpired leading up to yesterday's ivory ban, eBay might very well be forced to change their autograph sale policies as well (although hopefully not in the form of an across the board ban).

Hi Robert,

That would be very helpful for the hobby, but I don't think the UACC has anywhere near the credibility or expertise to get eBay to do something about forgeries (though the media is so easily manipulated these days anyone can pass themselves off as an expert).
