I've been out of the loop for a few years. BTW, I just heard the sonic boom from the Shuttle passing overhead (south Georgia). Anyway, I see on eBay not nearly as much space "stuff" as what used to be there. Also interesting to note that eBay now lists resources to help people spot forgeries and autopens. They fought me tooth and nail years ago to prevent that kind of information from getting out. Glad to see they've now embraced a more ethical posture. So what's happening with collecting these days? Market shrinking? |

My recollection, and perhaps it's incorrect, is that eBay's space listings are somewhere between double and triple what they were from just a few years ago. Of course, part of that can be attributed to an increase in 'junk' listings, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as shrinking. Beyond eBay though, the market has definitely grown. A few years ago, the only regular auctions were Superior, Aurora and eBay. Now, in addition to those, we have Astro-Auction, Swann and Heritage. Those wouldn't exist if the market wasn't there to support them. And there has been a growing trend to move away from the auction format, with astronauts consigning to direct sale dealers such as The Space Source and Farthest Reaches more so than they did in the past. Astronauts (and other space celebrities) have also taken to selling directly through their own websites. So overall, I would say that the market is growing, and with the end of the shuttle program and start of a new lunar program, the outlook is that it will continue to grow. |

Hi Russ, good to see you on cS. I also think the volume is a bit less on ebay than it was some time ago - but listening to the news ebay seemed to have reached its peak already and are now fighting against decreasing auctions. Maybe the fees are one reason. Overall the market is growing or in some parts booming - agree with Robert here. There are lots of alternatives these days to ebay and if you look at the Russian, Indian and Chinese space memorabilia market, it is more or less exploding. (again some parts, mainly the philatelic stuff). See here. People begin to realize there are true rarities out there and even the long forgotten Russian space collectibles market seems to become more interesting. Hi Russ!I can only agree with Florian: the flown hardware / memorabilia market over here seems buoyant and expanding... I just wonder whether people are beginning to express a preference for buying from trusted dealers / individuals rather than from the anonymous vendors on EBay. (I DON'T include in this the many excellent and totally reliable traders such as Florian, Jerry Czubinski etc!) In fact, like many people, I have never sold on the 'Bay: my preference and it hasn't hurt my business! www.thespace-station.com | |
