Here are two more for your consideration this month from CCSA. http://www.myccsa.com/piclot.asp?lot=686 This color 8x10 shows the crew from this legendary NASA mission on it and is in NM/MT shape. It comes signed in black sharpie beautifully by ALL 3 and included are Gus Grissom, Ed White, & Roger Chaffee!! Ideal for matting/framing and comes with a COA from the professional authenticators at Stat Authentic. Valued in the high hundreds.-and- http://www.myccsa.com/piclot.asp?lot=394 This vintage red-laced baseball is well-used and comes sweet spot signed by ALL 3 moonwalkers in blue ink. They are all on or near the sweet spot and the signatures grade 8's overall. Included are Buzz, Michael, & Neil and the ball comes with a COA from the expert authenticators at Stat Authentic for authenticity purposes. Valued in the very high hundreds. Thanks! Dave

Dave, Can you tell us something about "Stat Authentic" who issued the COA on the Apollo 1 crew signed photo? - such as how much experience they have in astronaut autograph authenticating and how much of that they do? Thanks. And are you asking us our opinions on the two lots? If so, then CCSA needs to have an authenticator other than "Stat" check out the Apollo 1 (I think I know what the R&R space authenticator would say about it). And we need to see a better image of the Armstrong sig on the ball. Bob Mc. [Edited by Bob M (November 22, 2006).] |

That Apollo 1 photo was taken only 10 days before they perished: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/ABSTRACTS/GPN-2000-000618.html That pretty much sums up that item. |

Stat Authentic mainly deals in sports autographs and memorabilia. Here's a link to their website: http://www.statauthentic.com/ Personally, I'd stay away from Collectors' Corner (CCSA) and Stat Authentications. I mainly collect sports cards, but also collect astronaut autographs, so I've got alot more experience on the sports side as opposed to astronauts. Stat and CCSA have both received quite a bit of flak in the sports hobby for questionable authentications. Steve

An excellent point. Also, if the picture was taken 10 days before the fire, it is pretty impressive that the photo would have been developed and then signed by all 3 crew members in 10 days. Of course, it is POSSIBLE that it could have happened, but back then you didn't just take a "jpeg" file down to your local Walgreens and have an 8x10 made up while you wait. If it had been developed and signed so quickly, one would think it would have been done for a friend or acquaintance ... so, why no personalization? ------------------ John Capobianco Camden DE [Edited by capoetc (November 23, 2006).] |

For fun, I'd like to see the paper the Apollo 1 image is printed on. I'd be curious if it's vintage in ANY regard. If this stood any chance of being authentic (which it isn't) it would likely be printed on red-stamped NASA glossy. If this is a vintage glossy, it would be one of extremely rare condition, with very little or no fading whatsoever. |
