I've been recently asked if an autograph I have on Astroauction is actually "hand-signed".

I've always wondered what the correct term is :
* hand-signed
* signed
* personally signed
* authentically signed
* inperson signed

As a non native English-speaking person to me this all means that an autograph is actually signed by the person in question, otherwise it would be called
- autopen
- secretarial
- preprinted
- stamped

But is there a difference to some people between "signed" and "hand-signed" ?

Florian

To me "authentically signed" reads better than the others...because it suggests the signature was authentically signed by the person whose name is depicted on the piece. Even better is to state that it is "authentically signed by Buzz Aldrin," for example. "Personally signed" isn't bad, but authentically signed sounds a little better to my ears.

I've seen "hand signed" and "signed" used too many times in forgery auctions. They are technically correct in saying the piece was signed by someone's hand, but they neglect to say whose hand signed it!

"Inperson signed" suggests the person who obtained it was in the company of the person signing it, at the time the signature was applied. I would only say this if the signature was actually obtained in person by the person selling it...or has a clear letter of provenance from the person who obtained it stating such.

Of course, in the end, the signature has to speak for itself.

I agree that ultimately the signature must speak for itself. If someone is intent on deception, then how they describe the item is irrelevant - technically correct or not. I agree that "authentically signed by . . . " or similar is more compelling than simply "hand signed" or other descriptions. Also, I have grown to associate "in person" with "fake" given its overuse by questionable sellers.

However, the best description that I look for is the "spaceflori" seal of approval.
