Yes, this does indeed appear to be a genuine signature of Air Force Major Mike Adams. The commemorative cachet cover was for his fourth X-15 rocketplane flight in April 1967, which was the 178th X-15 flight test in the whole series of 199 missions from 1959-68. He was killed only a few months afterwards (Nov. 15) on Flight Number 191. |

Have also seen a number of times where Glenn and Yeager have crossed things off items they have signed. |

Names of new pilots were often hand-printed on the Boy Scout Cachets (of which this is one) for flights before a rubber stamp pilot name was available to use on cachets. The hand-printed pilot names quite often get confused as autographs. I would imagine that a previous owner of this cover crossed out the hand-printed Adams name so that it did not get confused with the real Adams auto (and BTW - this auto looks authentic to me too.).Dennis Dillman |

I noticed that many of the seller's covers have address labels in the name of Raymond DuBeau and, as many of us long-time space cover collectors know, Ray DuBeau was an early space cover servicer and cachet designer. I asked the seller if he obtained the covers from Ray DuBeau, and he replied that he did and that Ray is his father. But he wasn't able to supply any info about the Mike Adams signed X-15 cover other than it belonged to his father. It's already proven to be quite popular, as it's already over $800 with 5+ days to go! It's not a ,,,choice,,, cover either, with it having the written name inked out and it appears to possibly be a somewhat yellowed lower quality government envelope. But no matter, it's a very rare autographed item and looks like the winning bidder will be paying a lot for it. Bob McLeod |

How many Mike Adams autographs are in the hands of collectors? Not many apparently. I am aware of the other authentic one on Michael Wright's site. Would be interesting to hear about any other examples out there. Yes this should be a fun one to watch. He is needed to complete a set of X-15 pilots and so appears to be the "Button Gwinnett" of X-15/space autographs. |

The X-15 cover lot sold at the last Superior auction contained three Mike Adams signed covers. And while it contained many of the other harder to find X-15 signatures, it sold for nearly $5000, if I remember correctly.I don't know if this cover was one of those three...or is from a different source. |

He is also offering an XB-70 1st flight cover "signed" by Al White and Joe Cotton. Too small to tell for sure but it certainly looks like the "servicer" signatures I've seen on some covers, that many mistake for actual autographs. |

Scott....As far as how many Adam's autographs are in the hands of collectors....I do not know. I am aware that in addition to Michael Wright's there are 2 in the hands of a Texas collector that shall remain nameless but he got them in a big auction a couple of years ago. I am personally aware of and know of two authentic ones here in the state of Florida and once again the owners shall not be identified for various reasons. I know of one pristine cover similar to the one on Ebay but far superior. I also am aware of an 8x10 photo of Mike Adams standing alongside of an F-104 Starfighter and signed as "Michael J. Adams" and is not dedicated. Those are ALL the ones that I personally know of though there must be many out there. PLEASE do not email me to ask the names of the owners because I CANNOT tell you for various good reasons. Mike is very difficult to locate.Good Luck to whomever buys the one on Ebay !! It is "gonna be a dogfight" !! Best Always...Donald Brady |

Thanks, Donald. No problem here - not interested in the names of the owners, just a rough idea how many there are. Interesting info. |

I've put my Adams auto'd cover up on PictureTrail, in my "My Favorite Space Covers" album. The link is: http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid823210 and the Adams is about the 8th cover into the album. |

Don, does your list include the two covers that were sold as part of the x-15 job-lot at Superior in the Spring ($6000), or the Adams signed photo sold there a couple of years back? BestPaul Bramley |

Hi Paul....Long time no hear. I hope you are well. Yes, the Superior covers (2) are included and I believe the purchaser is from Texas as I did contact him about it. I was one of the losing bidders on those items.I can no longer afford such forays into auctions. However, I was not aware of the signed photo that was sold. I am sure that there are quite a few out there !. Best Always, Donald |

Was there a second lot on the Superior sale with two covers? I remember there being three covers in that one lot. I was able to dig up the following photo I had saved as a reference pic when that auction ended: |

Interesting that these three Mike Adams signed X-15 covers via Superior and the one now on eBay all bear Raymond DuBeau address labels - Bob Mc. |
