mercury 7 astronaut signed cover in April Mastronet auction lot 336.. autographs all authentic?

The astronauts have signed in the cache area in either blue or black ink and inscribed (most likely by Shepard), "To Richard E. Byrd Beverley / from The Astronauts." The envelope carries a plate block of 4 cent U.S. commemorative "Project Mercury" stamps as well as the cancellation, "Cape Canaveral Fla. / FEB 20 / 3:30 PM / 1962."

I checked the Mercury 7 signed cover on Mastronet and it's shown too small to see the autographs well enough to say for sure one way or the other. But from what I can see it has a good chance of being authentic and a super item. I asked Mastronet to send a bigger and better scan of it but don't know if they do such, but they should since their on site images are too small.

It's impossible to tell anything from the image on the listing. You really need a good scan to verify these signatures as such items sometimes have a mixture of genuine signatures and autopens (early autopens in fountain pen can look very real).

I have to say I find their online auctions almost impossible to navigate. Even when you know what you're looking for it's completely hit and miss as the 'quirky' section titles tell you nothing at all...

Did anyone that knows this stuff ever look harder at the signatures on this item? Any new opinions?

While not the expert others like other CSpacer's, I personally think the item is authentic. The Grissom is a little weird, but overall they all look good to me. Here's a link to a better image of the signatures.

Looks fine to me and almost a classic. The inscription is by Shepard and even though the Grissom may look a bit odd, I would have no problem with it. A thumbs up on this vintage-era signed Mercury FDC that is similar to one of mine that isn't inscribed.

I was going to bid but I've never bid on Mastronet and "registration is closed" until after 4/23. Oh well. Maybe next time.

The Grissom is a bit odd, but compares to something I have - where Virgil is spelled out.

Too bad about the inscription, though.

Still a very interesting piece.

Actually, now that I look at it again - and compared it, again, to one of mine, the Grissom leaves me a bit uncomfortable. However, I'll defer to Ken's expertise on this one.

Sold for $3,136 including buyer's premium. Seems like a pretty good deal to me especially with a nice frame already done.

All times are CT (US)
