The following listing is posted on ebay. # 6570018928. I contacted the seller and advised them of these preprinted signatures. Here is the response I got ----- "The baseball itself is probably NOT rare, but I haven't seen any autographed balls here in Houston! The autographs are NOT mass produced! How did you get Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin to sign that many baseballs? I doubt very seriuosly the 250 balls you got for the conference were autographed balls! If they were and you are just one of untold dozens of dealers in the Houston area, then they would have had to sign thousands of these and I know they didn't! I have checked with six or seven dealers in the area and the autographed balls ARE rare!

Thanks for your input!

Ed (coke-n-more)"

Can others please contact him so he believes us!

I told the seller that in fact we purchased 250 of these preprinted balls to be used as promotional items at meetings.

This guy is a gracious gentleman! Here is is email to me.

Good morning Mr. Kaplan. I e-mailed Collect Space about the baseball. I DO NOT want to sell an item that is not genuine! I trust your judgement, but I need to be certain. I have looked at my high resolution images and the ink, as well as the ink smears, still appear to be real. (there is blue ink on the red threads below the A in Neil Armstron's signature) If these were mass produced, they did a fantastic job with the facsimile of both signatures. Thanks again for your help and knowledgable input!!!

If the auction ends before Mr. Pearlman or someone at Collect Space confirms the authentication issue, (I gave them the auction number for reference) please rest assured that I will set the record straight with the high bidder and offer them a full refund of their purchase price.

Hopefully, I can resolve this issue BEFORE the auction ends.

Regards,
Ed Breland

That ball is fake, as it is identical (except for the smeared "autographs") to the ball I got at the Houston Astros - St Louis Cardinals game on July 20th, 1994 at the Astrodome. There were several astronauts there for an exhibition game with some former Astros (the baseball team), including Gene Cernan and Alexei Leonov. Cernan gratiously signed the ball, although unfortunately, the felt-tip pen he used wasn't that good, as the autograph has almost completely faded away

Steve,

In regards to your Cernan signature, it is probably more to due with the baseball than the pen used. These mass produced baseballs are usually made of a cheaper, synthetic material instead of real horsehide/cowhide leather that official baseballs are made of. I've had similar problems with baseballs like this in the past, and it certainly wasn't because of the pen.

I've had facsimile "signed" baseballs before, and some have had smeared signatures, so I would not use that as a measuring tool to judge if an autograph is authentic or not.

In my experiences, when getting baseballs signed, either the official or unofficial, felt tip pens and Sharpies are the worst choice to use, even if the signature looks beautiful to start they will fade in some time. Ball point IMO is about the best option, or I've had good success with "roller ball" style pens.
