There's a user called "splashinator" on eBay selling shuttle-flown commemorative flag presentations - Apollo 11 25th anniversary, and Return to Flight. Here's one currently being offered: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3969953061

I actually bid on one of these items without really thinking about it but now I see that the seller has put another identical presentation up for sale and looking back at their completed items I see the seller has already sold two of each presentation type in the last month.

Now doing a bit more research I realise that at the top of these presentations there's a section cut away which should have had the name of the NASA employee they were given to. With that unique part missing presumably the only authenticating part remaining would be the signatures, if they are not preprinted that is. In the case of the two "Return to Flight" items sold the sigs seem identical. Does someone have one of these presentations? Are the signatures real or preprinted?

Maybe I'm being overly suspicious but with the name removed what's to stop someone printing copies of these anonymous part-certificates, sticking on a $1 NASA flag at the top of each one, and selling them for $100+ each?

I saw a large collection of flown flags sell early last year, but all of them had the names on the presentations and I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't have someone's name on it.

2 other items to point out as a possible problem, the bottom of all the pages are cut with the white border of the photo ending in mid-air. NASA photos & lithos always have some type of a border around the photo. When the images are selected by NASA, they want to know what the exact image is that's being put on an award presentation and I've never seen a true NASA photo cut off like this.

The last point is the plastic sleeve on the award. I'm not sure, but I thought all of the flown items were glued to the presentation to guarantee that the flag can't be removed without destroying the display card. Being able to interchange flags is a little strange and it's something I've never before.

All times are CT (US)
