While this probably doesn't touch most of our space transactions I think it's still worth to mention here...especially if you are selling and buying other stuff online...I read a newspaper article today about online auction Escrow fraud that is taking place here in Europe more and more (and I strongly assume anywhere else in the world as well). It always works the same way : A seller on ebay or any other auction site gets contacted privately with the offer to buy an article outside the auction system with the request to let an Escrow service handle the transaction. If the seller agrees he will be pointed to a (fake but professional looking) website even with ebay-close names such as "ebaysafe.net" e.G. from where the seller gets an email later with the information "you received xxx$ - please send your goods now to the buyer". Well, you all guess it probably....the website is fake, the buyer is fake, even his ebay ID may be kidnapped and the email the seller received is fake - and his goods he sent out after the confirmation email are gone forever ! Bottom line - before you use an Escrow system, make sure verify the authenticity of a proposed service. There is a good website at : http://www.sos4auctions.com/escrow/escrow.asp Hope it never happens to anyone out here. Florian

I may be in the Stone Age, but I have sold on eBay 4 years and never used escrow. I never offered it because I am not quite certain how it works and how many buyers would want to use it. What does everyone think of it? |

Hi Scott,I'm with you - I also never used it or ever offered it as I found space collectors (99,999999%) honest and fair so no real need to do that. However if you are buying electronic equipment and things like that on ebay apparently there are a lot of crooks around ! BTW ebay offers their own Escrow service I believe but I guess it's not the cheapest one so people looking for other services. Florian |

Thanks Florian, your concern in this area shows why you're one of the better people to deal with. Good idea to stick with Ebay escrow services, should such a service ever be necessary....they may be "overpriced", but at least you're getting something for your money - - a company you know isn't fly-by-night and not there to scam you out of your goods. (Don't think you might never need an online escrow company; what if a seller with zero feedback were offering a legit "signed by all 7" Mercury piece that you managed to acquire for a nice price? How else are you going to secure the deal without risking your cash?) -Chet [This message has been edited by chet (edited July 24, 2003).] | |
