Lunar Lander Training Vehicle (LLTV) 500 pound lift rocket, a companion to the flown unit recently sold at RR Auction. Includes NASA Manned Space Center (MSC) Parts Control Tag documenting history of this engine (serial #8). The engine was installed and subsequently removed from service due to a misaligned injector retainer from LLTV 952 (the only surviving LLTV of the original three produced). The 500 pound lift rocket ("500 pounds" refers to the rated thrust output of the mono-propellant combustion chamber) were used onboard the LLRV and LLTV to replicate the performance of the Lunar Module in 1/6 lunar gravity (employed in conjunction with the single LLRV/LLTV gas turbine engine which had approximately a one to one vehicle to thrust ratio). For those unfamiliar with the role of the LLRV and its LLTV successor, Neil Armstrong's presentation provides a good introduction. The 500 pound lift rockets, activated as part of the flight vehicles Lunar Simulation mode are observed firing at about the 2:20 mark. Page 43 of NASAs LLRV monograph SP-2004-4535, "Unconventional, Contrary and Ugly: The Lunar Landing Research Vehicle," includes a discussion and diagram of both the 500 pound lift engine and its smaller companion attitude control engines used on these vehicles. As mounted on the flight vehicle:
