I am selling an Apollo 15 lunar surface flown state flag.

Signed by Al Worden. This is a 6" x 4" cloth flag picturing a bald eagle perched on a rock grasping a shield and holding a ribbon in its mouth with the words "State Sovereignty, National Union" (found on the State Seal of Illinois).

The flag has been signed by Worden, "This flag was flown to the lunar surface on board the lunar module Falcon July 26-August 7, Al Worden CMP Apollo 15".

Accompanying the flag is a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Worden giving a complete history of this important scientific mission to the moon. While on the return trip to Earth, Worden performed the first ever deep space EVA, to recover film that had been exposed during the flight.

Price $7000. Thanks. — Brian... Now Reduced to $4600!

The inscription can't really be right. The command module was called "Endeavour" and the lunar module "Falcon". So did the flag fly on board "Endeavour" in lunar orbit or "Falcon" to the lunar surface?

I purchased this from Heritage auctions in 2008. The inscription I put on here was from the auction catalogue, which had an error. Apologies!

The flag inscription actually says "This flag was flown to the lunar surface on board the lunar module Falcon July 26-August 7, Al Worden CMP Apollo 15".

I have now amended/corrected my original post. Thanks for pointing it out!

Is it just me or does a lot of the writing look like it's written over something else? On board, August 7 1971 and Al look good but everything else looks written over or is it just a bleed of the felt tip on all the other words? Just curious.

I think the corners show glue pad spots where the flag was glued to a presentation did not allow the ink to bleed as it did in the body of the flag. My question is if it where mounted to a presentation why would it have been removed?

I also assumed that the flag has been in a presentation of some description. What it was, and why it may have been removed, I have no idea!

The pen used was a roller ball type I think, and has subsequently "feathered" (I believe that's the term). It hasn't been "written over" in any way that I can see or tell. Thanks.

Not only do I not think it was written over, I knew Al Worden for many years and, if he provided a COA it was and is as advertised.

Al had the highest standard for provenance and a very sharp memory I do not believe he would put it on a COA unless he was sure of the history.

Thanks, was just curious and couldn't tell from the pic very well. It's a nice piece and having met Al a few times and chatted with him, his American pride was evident.
