On eBay tonight for a 5-day auction is a one-of-a-kind display of a SR-71 Blackbird large flown U.S. flag with photos, patch and engraved metal plaque. The overall display is 26x37-inches with the 3 mats mounted to foamcore, ready to frame. The supersonic-flown 12x20-inch U.S. flag is sewn from red, white and blue nylon components (not printed). There is a photo of the flight crew and their signatures on a laser-engraved metal plate from Beale Air Force Base, and a large photo of a NASA SR-71 powering up its engines. Both photos are real, chemically-processed photos (no computer prints). There is also an original CIA/Lockheed/USAF patch for the 40th anniversary of the A-12 first flight (the precursor of the SR-71). Details and more photos via my eBay page. Thanks again for looking!

I have a flown flag and patch display from Col. Lyman "Mike" Kidder who was a dear friend, SR-71 pilot and commander of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. He was the only SR-71 pilot I ever had the pleasure of meeting. When he moved from Orlando to South Carolina several years ago he gave me not only the display but his flight suit and jacket complete with all the patches telling me that no one in his family had any interest in them and they where going in the trash. These are great pieces of American history and greatly undervalued in my opinion as there will never be another aircraft like the SR-71. RIP Mike

Definitely agree about the SR-71. That’s an outstanding gift and legacy from your friend – you should be proud to display those in his memory. I’ve lost track of the times that friends and co-workers have given me smaller gifts (boxes of patches, pins, hardware, etc.) with the same rationale – their families really didn’t care about this stuff. Guess we should be grateful and embrace the opportunity to display and enjoy the items, and try to see that they get passed on to others that will appreciate them someday. | |
