This model, of the Command and Service Modules flown by the Apollo astronauts, was made about 50 years ago by the Walter J. Hyatt Co. for North American Aviation. NAA, the manufacturer of the spacecraft itself, then gave these models out to the astronauts, NASA personnel, and politicians who supported NASA. It is in excellent condition. It comes with the original box, and it looks as if it spent most of the last 50 years protected in that box from damage. There is none of the yellowing often seen in this model, or the cracks and scratches seen in almost all such vintage models. Please note, however, that the Launch Escape System tower at the top is missing. (One could say that since that tower was jettisoned minutes after launch, this model still looks like the spacecraft used by the astronauts to return from the moon, after the LM was used. Or used during all of Apollo 7 and Apollo 8. But perhaps that's just an attempt at positive spin.)
These CSM models are more rare than the Lunar Module contractor's models. One sold last year for $3,994. Another relatively recent sale was for $5,250. Despite its otherwise bright and pristine condition, because of the missing piece the price for this one is $1900, plus $25 for insured Priority Mail shipping. I would be willing to take payment in two installments. |
