Decorate your Space with Space Art

Rocketman's art store has launched! I am now offering my space art for sale online as high quality wall art and space images printed on a variety of products. My first shops are open on Pixels.com and Fine Art America.

[EDIT 2022-May]
Prints of my space-inspired artwork are available for purchase from my website’s online shop. Selected artwork can be ordered as paper giclee, metal, acrylic prints, or acrylic blocks.

My first six creative offerings are a mix of real space and astronomy, and fantasy pieces where I invoke some whimsical artistic license.

Later this year, I plan to begin offering products featuring some of my space insignia designs.

I will also be creating new artwork that honors the history of space exploration. My current work in progress is a series of creations highlighting the design evolution of the Apollo Lunar Module.

Excerpt from Dave's biography:

Dave Ginsberg is an analytical left-brained artist and a creative right-brained engineer. His artwork combines his passions for spaceflight, astronomy, science, teaching, and the visual arts. Dave has been a member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) since 2016.

His artwork has been displayed at Seattle's Museum of Flight, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Spacefest in Tucson, Arizona, The Art of Planetary Science exhibitions at the University of Arizona, and the Digital Arts Festival in Redmond, Washington. Dave's 16-foot tall solar system mural was on permanent display at Seattle's Museum of Flight from 2007 to 2017.

His work has been published in the IAAA Pulsar magazine and Dennis Jenkins' book, Space Shuttle, Developing an Icon. Dave designed the insignia for collectSPACE which has been used as the website's brand identity since 2013. He created the logo for the National Association of Rocketry "Pay Forward" 2017 fundraising campaign.

Three of Dave's creations have made trips into Earth orbit and back, having flown on space shuttle Atlantis, the Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft, a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft, and the International Space Station.

Dave's space art portfolio can be found at pixel-planet-pictures.com.

The Fledgling Eagle Has Landed

I have just completed the first image in a new series that will depict the design evolution of the Apollo Lunar Module. I have always been fascinated by the many iterations that the lunar lander went through during its conception and development. Spacecraft designers conquered seemingly endless impossible engineering challenges while figuring out how to get people to the Moon and back.

As the early Apollo program was beginning to take shape, NASA engineers were working to decide among three different methods of landing astronauts on the Moon. The mode called Lunar Orbit Rendezvous was chosen. That meant an entirely new kind of spacecraft had to be developed – one that was specifically designed to land on the Moon, then lift off from the surface and rendezvous with a mother ship in lunar orbit.

Spacecraft designers at Langley Research Center, led by Maxime Faget, worked through several designs in the evolution of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). This new image depicts one of the earliest LEM designs from 1962.

Available as wall art and on a variety of products at my shops at Pixels.com and Fine Art America.

The Way It Was Imagined: 1962 LEM

The second piece of artwork in my collection honoring the engineering development of the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module is now complete. The image features the same early LEM design from 1962 that was unveiled in February, now depicted just after landing on the Moon as it might have been imagined by artists of the time.

The style of the scene echoes that of early concept illustrations that were typical of the period. Steep mountains dominate the lunar landscape. A crater has been excavated into the soft dusty surface by the descent engine exhaust plume. The sky is dotted with brilliant stars and is filled with bright cloud-like areas of color. The Earth is shown as a cloudless globe. And, the Apollo Command and Service modules are clearly visible streaking overhead.

The artwork will make its art show debut at next month's Spacefest in Tucson, AZ. Prints and other items are now available. Find them using the store on my website or go directly to either of my shops at Fine Art America or Pixels.com.

Moonlight Dreams

I have a feeling this one may appeal to many of those who frequent this forum. A child sleeps in his space-themed bedroom – filled with space posters, book, toys, models and other collectibles – and dreams of a flight to the Moon.

You might recognize some of the things you find in this room. You may even have had some of them, yourself. During your virtual walk in this space, discover again (or for the first time) the nostalgia of space memorabilia and collectibles.

Here’s a key to the items in the room.

Prints are available for purchase from my shop. Choose from paper giclée, metal, or acrylic prints.

Join the Crew of Spaceship Earth

This art deco style piece invites us to take an active role in taking care of our spaceship we call Earth.

Our planet is a spaceship of amazing, yet finite, resources. Join the Crew of Spaceship Earth is a call for the people of our planet to cease acting like mere passive passengers on our ball in space and start taking an active role in caretaking for our fragile ecosystems to ensure the survival and prosperity of all living things. It calls us to step up and take responsibility for preserving, for our very survival, the life sustaining environment and resources upon which all life on this planet depends.

I’ve had this vision in my head for quite a while. Reading Nicole Stott’s book Back to Earth inspired me to finally create it. My hope is that this artwork will serve as inspiration to you too.

Nicole presents three simple unifying lessons for us as Spaceship Earth crewmembers:

  • We live on a planet.

  • We are all Earthlings.

  • The only border that matters is the thin blue line of atmosphere that blankets and protects us all.

The time is long overdue that we open our eyes to what we have been doing to the life support systems of our planet. It is time to promote ourselves from mere passengers to active crew members who have the responsibility to make certain that our Spaceship Earth can continue to sustain life for the foreseeable future.

Bubble Blast

A whimsical imagining of Grumman's 1962 Apollo Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) design concept, playfully converted into a bubble gum machine. I affectionately call this early design configuration the "Bubble LEM" due to its bulbous helicopter-like cockpit and large curved windows.

Read here for more on how this idea came to be.

Prints are available for purchase from my shop. Choose from paper giclee, metal, acrylic prints, and acrylic blocks.

The series shows the LEM enjoying the simple pleasures of blowing a bubble, larger and larger, until ... POP!

Magnificent Ride

Announcing the launch of Magnificent Ride, my latest space-inspired artwork, coinciding with the 53rd anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. In this piece, I have attempted to capture the awesome beauty of the giant exhaust plume from the Saturn V first stage rocket engines.

Magnificent Ride celebrates the mighty Saturn V rocket which boosted the Moon bound Apollo missions to their celestial target. The Saturn V was also used to send Apollo 9 into Earth orbit to test the Lunar Module in a manned operational mode. Its final task was to boost the Skylab space station into Earth orbit in 1973.

The name of this piece comes from the words of Neil Armstrong, commander of the first mission to land humans on Earth's natural satellite, after the mighty Saturn V rocket boosted their spacecraft on a trajectory to reach the Moon.

Neil's comment to Mission Control, and by extension the many men and women who helped bring the Saturn V into existence, was, "Eh, Houston, Apollo 11. That Saturn gave us a magnificent ride."

Prints are available for purchase from my website’s shop. Choose from paper giclée, metal, or acrylic prints.

Tip of the Arrow

Coinciding with the launch of Artemis I, I am launching my latest space-inspired artwork called Tip of the Arrow.

Tip of the Arrow is my rendition of Artemis I lifting skyward on its first test flight to the Moon. This 'Block 1' configuration of the Space Launch System boasts a maximum of 8.8 million pounds of thrust – the most powerful rocket launched to date by NASA since the Apollo program.

In Greek mythology, Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. Artemis is the Olympian goddess of the hunt and the moon, among other things. She was depicted as a huntress carrying a quiver with arrows and holding a bow. The name of this piece pays homage to this, as well as to the fact that this mission is the first in a planned series of increasingly ambitious missions.

Prints are available for purchase from my website’s shop. Choose from paper giclée, metal, or acrylic prints.

Orion's Distant Orbit

With the successful splashdown of Orion, I have dropped my latest space-inspired artwork called Orion's Distant Orbit.

Orion's Distant Orbit depicts the Orion spacecraft sailing on its first lunar test flight. Alone and unoccupied in cislunar space, Orion cautiously circles the Moon at a distance greater than any crew-rated spacecraft has been to date.

The Moon enters the frame to welcome its new visitor, having been beyond the reach of human exploration for fifty years. The circles radiating out from the Earth and Moon represent their respective gravitational fields

Orion is the first spacecraft intended to carry crew to reach beyond the Earth's direct influence since the Apollo missions. With this successful test flight complete, the door is open for humans to return to the Moon once more.

Prints are available for purchase from my website's shop. Choose from archival paper giclée, metal, or acrylic prints.

Double Boosted

Marking the 42nd anniversary of the first launch of the Space Shuttle, I have launched my latest space-inspired artwork, Double Boosted.

The Space Shuttle was arguably one of the most beautiful space vehicles ever flown. While on the launch pad, its tall fuel tank with its ogive-shaped dome, flanked by twin solid rocket boosters, looked like a cathedral pointed toward the heavens. Affixed to the side of the fuel tank was the Orbiter, itself a graceful testament to beautiful engineering form serving multiple functions.

I have attempted to capture the visual experience of witnessing a Space Shuttle launch in person. There is a uniquely awe-inspiring quality to seeing such a beautiful combination of graceful lines coupled with raw power. The title of this artwork refers to the twin solid rocket boosters which provided 83 percent of the total 6.8 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.

Prints are available for purchase from my website's shop. Choose from archival paper giclée, metal, or acrylic prints.

Moonshot 1970: Moments to Touchdown

A reimagining in 3D of the cover illustration on the 1967 book "Moonshot 1970". Written by Martha Lomask, illustrated by Gordon Mellor. The Apollo Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) is moments from touching down on its landing spot, illuminated in part by the soft blue Earthlight. The sky is dotted with brilliant stars and is filled with bright cloud-like areas of color. The Earth is shown as a cloudless globe. An elongated Apollo Command and Service Module streaks overhead. Modeled and rendered in 3D, the image echoes the style of the children's book.

Read here for the backstory behind this image.

Prints are available for purchase from my online shop.
