I'm in the market for full crew signed Apollo mission insignia launch covers. Not particularly interested in flown or insurance covers ($$$), just regular launch covers with the full Apollo crew, their color mission insignia, and postmarked the date of launch. If you've got anything collecting cobwebs in your collection, I'd love to hear about it! Thanks! |

Keep in mind that there were no crew emblem or insignia covers printed for the Apollo 7 flight as the official versions started with Apollo 8 (produced by NASA Exchange here at Kennedy Space Center).Starting with Apollo 13, though, different types of mission emblem cachet covers were printed. But not just by NASA Exchange, but also, by space souvenir companies, aerospace contractor teams, philatelic firms (global as well), and stamp clubs in Florida and Texas. In trying to acquire a crew-signed Apollo emblem cachet cover series, it would be easier to obtain those crews from the later Apollo flights on launch day insignia or crew patch covers, but would be difficult to acquire from Apollos 8-12 as a collection series. As far as the autographs go, it might be a little bit difficult in trying to acquire an Apollo 13 insignia cover signed by Swigert with Lovell and Haise all together, but really difficult in locating all 4 signatures together with Mattingly included. But of course, most of the earlier Apollo signed insignia covers from 8-11, on the average, are not that common with genuine signatures. The hardest would be Apollos 8, 11, and 10 in that order, from my opinion. Other later Apollo emblem covers signed by their crews are pretty much "out there," however, probably not too common with Mattingly and Young on Apollo 16, though. |

Ken has provided a very good over-view of Apollo crew emblem/crew patch cacheted covers and the difficulties in acquiring Apollo 8-17 crew signed crew emblem cacheted covers. Besides the difficulty of just finding some of these available, the prices of several would also be a problem, especially with Apollos 8, 11 and 13. It's especially rare to even see Apollo 8 and 11 mission emblem crew signed covers, much less available. An easier and likely to be more successful goal, would be to concentrate on finding covers with authentic crew autographs on any type cover, such as commercial cacheted covers, NASA/KSC official cacheted covers and Prime Recovery Ship covers, all of which mostly exist in sufficient numbers. One of the rarest autograph sets in our hobby would be a complete set of mission emblem crew signed covers for all 11 Apollo manned flights (Apollo 7-17) and might as well make it 15 by including Skylab 2, 3 and 4, plus ASTP. (NASA/KSC supplied an official cachet for Apollo 7 with the Apollo 7 crew patch in its design, which serves very well as a mission emblem cover for Apollo 7). |

As Bob pointed out, there is an official KSC-NASA postal department decal-type sticker that can be used on Apollo 7 flight covers. The sticker does feature Apollo 7's crew insignia, but unfortunately, it's not a color reproduction (printed in dark blue with white lettering). The insignia portion of the sticker, though, is attached in the center of a white-square panel frame and it might be best--in some instances--to cut the insignia portion away from its attached background. What I have done several times was to purchase a decal sheet that contains a nice individually-cut Apollo 7 crew emblem, printed in full official colors. Once detached or peeled away from the full sheet of other Apollo emblem stickers, of those that I have, it makes a perfect fit as a cachet on most all philatelic covers and does not interfere in touching or overlapping with an applied KSC/Cape postal cancellation. But of course, it cannot be used if there are any crewmen signatures not visible, covering, or touching the decal sticker cachet in anyway. I have seen, though, a few decal-affixed signed covers in this way for Apollo 7, but it would be extremely difficult to locate any signed covers in this way. |

I can't thank you both enough for your opinions on this. I'm a relatively young collector and thought this might be a good long-term project over the next few decades. I figure they all must be out there and if I'm patient and strategic with my investments, it would be doable.Thank you for clarifying the circumstances with Apollo 7, I had some mixed information about their covers and I too figured Apollos 8, 11, and 13 would be the more expensive ones to find. But the primary reason I thought I might aspire to this project was because I have a really nice set of covers for all the unmanned missions, then I acquired a really nice Swigert owned/signed A13 insignia cover and added Lovell and Haise last year (No Mattingly, but that's ok with me for now). I figured I was a third of the way through the tough ones and a complete set of Apollo covers with the manned covers crew signed would make ambitious but not impossible goal. There was a crew signed Apollo 9 emblem cover that went up for auction a few weeks ago, but to make a short story long, I didn't win it, maybe to someone on here. It was a nice piece. |

Glad to help out anyway we (and I know Bob is too) can! Your depicted Apollo 13 crew signed cover is a nice one, with flown crewman Swigert's vintage signature, that's on a MSCSC printed emblem or crew patch cachet. It has a Houston postmark on launch day.I think you may have seen my auctioned-off Apollo 9 insignia cover that had been crew signed (was it from RR Auctions last month)? It had been signed for me during the early 1970's when I was a high school student, however, if I recall it wasn't cancelled on launch day at KSC, but it was postmarked a day after the AS-504 liftoff. What other emblem covers do you need crew signed?

Thanks for your compliment! It's the only piece in my collection I've gone out of my way to get "crew completed". It's not the only crew signed item in my collection, but right now I'm open to any of the other Apollo missions. Seems like there are pretty nice Apollo 15 and Apollo 12 crew signed covers regularly on eBay that are very reasonably priced. Now that you mention it Ken, it was your cover on RR. Man that was a nice piece! I'm probably not looking to buy a bunch at once, as it can get pricey as mentioned. I figure if I keep my standards high and wait for the right piece to come along, it would be worth it. |

That's not one of the best Jim Lovell's I've seen... |

Ken mentioned about a decal-sticker/label that was provided and attached to covers for Apollo 7 that displayed the Apollo 7 crew insignia/mission emblem in blue and white. As shown here, the official Apollo 7 NASA/KSC decal/label was rectangular in shape and fairly large and covered over a third of the cover surface. Many of these labels were trimmed around the edges of the insignia, as the label on the Apollo 7 crew signed cover was, or affixed horizontally, or vertically as the other cover shows. It's recorded that 10,760 of these Apollo 7 labels were provided. As these Apollo 7 covers with NASA/KSC labels show, it is possible to acquire an entire Apollo cover set with all mission emblem cachets, either without autographs or signed. But as been pointed out, a complete crew signed set (Apollo 7-17) would be a very ambitious undertaking. | |
