I have 99 audio cassettes for sale to a good home... I have nothing to play these on anymore and would love them to be looked after or transfered to another format.

They are mainly self-made recordings from BBC tv and radio and ITN broadcasts of the later Apollo moon landings. I believe them to be quite rare as we all know the cost of video tape meant most of these programmes were wiped back then.

The tapes contain the live broadcasts of events and news reports by the Apollo space teams famous at the time. Also included are many US radio reports on events, space missions, etc.

There are also numerous other tapes with anniversary events/programmes and much audio from NASA press conferences including some from the Challenger accident, which is also very rare.

I am looking for a good price for these items and obviously a buyer in the UK because of the weight involved. Has anybody any interest? if so contact me.

I'm unsure of your tax system, but could you donate these to a museum and get a writeoff? Might be easier, makes them accessible, and you should value them at perhaps 200-300 pounds given the number and scarcity.

Thanks for the reply.

I have no idea regarding a museum write off to be honest, not sure if any museum in the UK would be interested. I had thought of contacting the BBC but wasn't sure of the copyright issues. Are they classed as illegal recordings? And I doubt they would pay anything for them.

Blimey Dave, I thought you had got rid of everything ages ago, are you still finding things.

Cassette to USB/MP3 converters aren't as expensive (or bulky) as they used to be, take a look on Amazon (other online retailers are available!). Seems a shame that you spent all that time recording them to sell them off in bulk without having the audio to keep for yourself.

Normally I'd offer to convert them all for you but couldn't give you any idea of how long it would take or when I could do it mate. Hope you get a good price for the tapes... Adam

Hi again Adam, well I sold the bulk of course (most to you!) but kept a pile also including all these, I haven't had any response so far and to be honest doubt I will.

I don't have the time to transfer (much like yourself) as I'm aware it would take forever!

Just seeing this! Certainly would be interested. I am looking for Apollo 14 from BBC and ITN as already have 15, 16, 17 transferred on to DVD from reel to reel tapes I obtained about 20 years ago. I only have a little of 11, 12, 13.

I have the shuttle on VHS and later flights on DVD. Would be most interested to see what you have? I live in Dundee.

There is about 90 minutes of Apollo 14 from BBC and ITN I believe, although I cant check as I can't play them at present.

I don't want to split the collection up and am looking to pass it on as a whole to be honest but I might be able to get 14 on a CD/DVD for you.

Thanks for the interest... and for the BBC link. I will certainly give that some thought.

Dave, if you have a complete copy of the Apollo 11 landing and the EVA on BBC, I would be happy to copy the tapes onto DVD for you. I would make a copy for myself and return the original DVD with the tapes to you (so as not to break up your set).

I would love to transfer the whole set, but I just wouldn't have the time. But what if five or six other volunteers each took on one Apollo mission? Perhaps a team of people could digitize all your cassettes, leaving you with the originals to sell.
