I am very interested in buying some of the very beautiful stamps that the russian issued with Laika, Belka and Strelka on them, but I know next to nothing about them. It would also be the first time I've attempted to track down some space memorobilia. Any help on information on the stamps (how many were there? cost etc?) and possible ways to track them down would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Darren

There are a lot. If you are interested in stamps commemorating the space dogs, they have been issued not just for Laika and not just by the Soviet Union. Belka, Strelka, Chernushka, and Zvezdochka (the later orbital dogs)have all been commemorated on stamps. Some of the most attractive ones have been issued by Eastern European countries (during their communist years), North Korea, and assorted African countries as well. You can get a taste for what's available on eBay. Search under "space dogs." There are always a dozen or so different stamps available. However, I would recommend contacting a stamp dealer directly. I did that once, expressing an interest in these dog stamps. The dealer sent me a list of the several dozen varieties he had with prices listed. The prices were very reasonable. |
