Alas, the days of the 'Matt Thomas Gemini 9 Spacewalk Recreation Society' have drawn to a close. There's nothing like finding yourself inside a SCAPE suit with the zip jammed to make you appreciate the importance of an oxygen bottle in the design of a sealed helmet and suit ensemble. I'll draw a veil over the image of a man, alone in the house, blinded by a totally fogged visor, rapidly suffocating and tugging desperately at a zip as he stumbles downstairs heading for the front door. Fortunately the zip gave way, saving my neighbours the disturbing yet memorable sight of a frantically gesticulating idiot in a spacesuit emerging from his front door and running headlong through his hedge, before finally crashing in an unconscious heap on the pavement. Ahem. I suggest the next owner might not want to try this at home... Cheers, Matt ------------------ www.spaceracemuseum.com |

Matt: yours is in awesome condition. Charles Bell from Merritt Island had a room full of these at the Heyl-Patterson building. But the excessive temperature in Florida had ruined the rubber. It was a sad sight. I don't know if any were salvaged by Mr. Bell's Widow when she had her auction. |

I was told by the previous owner that he had indeed acquired this suit from the Charles Bell auction. Maybe he had more than one stash of them? The inner rubber oxygen tubes are crumbling (as you'd expect with age), but the suit itself is still in really good, supple condition. The guy who sold me this one had also picked up a couple more, complete with boots, gloves and oxygen bottles. Alas, he wasn't selling. Cheers, Matt ------------------ www.spaceracemuseum.com |
