Ken Willoughby and Space Lectures are delighted to announce the next speaker coming to Pontefract, England: Apollo 13 capcom, Skylab 3 pilot and STS-3 commander — Jack Lousma.

Selected in 1966 as part of NASA's fifth group of astronauts, Lousma spent in excess of 67 days in space, including two spacewalks lasting 11 hours in total.

Details of the event are as follows:
  • Friday, 4 October 2019:
    Evening Dinner and Auction £100
    The Wentbridge House Hotel, Pontefract
Photo shoot: 18.00-18.45 (£30 payable on the day)
    Dinner 19.00-21.00
    Auction and autograph session

  • Saturday, 5 October 2019:
    Lecture £45
Carleton Community High School "The Infinity Theatre"
    Doors open at 14.00
Photo shoot: 14.45-15.45 (£30 payable on the day)
    Lecture 16.00-17.00
    Q&A session, approximately 15 to 20 minutes
    Autograph session

The announcement of Jack Lousma as our next guest speaker in October was greeted by a round of applause and a cheer from the lecture audience. I'm guessing Jack is a popular guy.

Now would be a good time for budding designers out there to conjure up a backdrop design for October.

I will personally guarantee a bespoke signed photo from Jack Lousma, courtesy of Space Lectures to the winning designer. If it transpires that the winning design is submitted by one of Space Lectures' own team, a "runner up" design as chosen by Ken will win the prize.

Jack's CV includes some stunning images so there is plenty of material to choose from.

Just had an update from Ken regarding the response to the Jack Lousma announcement.
Never had as many people pay so quick!
Tickets have yet to be printed but Ken is taking orders now and tickets will follow soon after. Details can be found above and should be on the Space Lectures website shortly. Please be sure to include an additional £1 to cover postage.

Early indications suggest Jack Lousma is going to a big draw. As my old Mum used to say when we were kids: "First up best dressed". Tickets will be allocated with payment: Ken can't bank a promise.

I will start the ball rolling with a photo backdrop mock up for Jack Lousma in October. Anybody else want to join the party?

I've heard on the grapevine that there are one or two members working on backdrop designs for the Lousma event in October. All comers are invited to submit their designs and please remember, if the winning design is submitted by one of the Space Lectures team, a runner up will be chosen by Ken Willoughby to receive their own personally signed portrait courtesy of Jack and Space Lectures.

Please be advised that Ken Willoughby will begin mailing out Lousma tickets this week. Unless of course payments have NOT included an extra £1 for postage and packing. In which case they can be collected on the door on the day... and ID will be required.

I was recently fortunate enough to visit Space Center Houston again (Level 9) and made a point of spending some time in the Skylab exhibit. What an amazing opportunity those men had after the confines of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. They really got the ball rolling with regards to man having a permanent home in space.

I cannot wait until Jack Lousma's visit in October to hear from the horse's mouth about their time on board. How do I drop into polite conversation that I've seen him in the shower?

A gentle reminder from Ken Willoughby about tickets for the Lousma event in October. Amongst the payments for tickets are a number of requests which have not as yet been followed up with payment.

Ken can't bank a promise!

Tickets will only be allocated with payment: Ken now has the tickets so orders will be processed and tickets shipped quickly.

Don't forget the additional £1 for postage and packing. With something like 400 people expected at the lecture and 100 for the dinner... that adds up to a lot of postage.

I've taken the liberty of having Mike Lambert's idea mocked up with Jack photo bombing the shot.

Good to hear Jack Lousma being interviewed on Talk Radio last evening... or should that be early this morning. He even got a plug in for Space Lectures in October despite being pressured for time by the host... though for the record the event is being held in Pontefract West Yorkshire and not Pontefract-Manchester!

For anybody who missed it I think it is on catch up somewhere. The show started at 10.00pm local GMT and finsihed at 1.00am on Monday morning. Jack's interview occupied that least 15 minutes or so of the show.

How is the backdrop competition Rick?

An event not to be missed. Jack has such of wealth of knowledge, expertise and of course spaceflight experience to convey to us all.

We'll be there with our usual tables of pin badges, mission patches, photos, astro food, matted and framed items, t-shirts and caps. Plus some nice flown shuttle presentations.

Tickets available now!

I would characterise the response to the backdrop call Nick as one of "quality over quantity." The event is now only two months away and we would welcome more backdrop designs for consideration.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the British Interplanetary Society for their continued support. The September edition of Spaceflight magazine carries our advert for the Lousma event and all being well so too will the October edition.

Please be advised that tickets for the Jack Lousma dinner and auction have nearly sold out. And with the event a matter of weeks away there is usually a last minute run on the lecture tickets so don't leave it too late. And remember, prices include one autograph per ticket.

I am not aware of any restrictions on what Jack will and won't sign. There will be vendors selling items on the day but please feel free to bring anything particularly special or bespoke and we will do our best to accommodate.

One last thing, a decision will be made in the next week or two as to which backdrop will be used for the photo shoot for the duration of the weekend. Anybody working on a design had better submit it quickly.

An update from Ken this evening. After a hiccup at the Padalka event earlier in the year there WILL be caterers at the venue for the Saturday Jack Lousma lecture serving the usual snacks and drinks.

Of course Eddie. The sound for the Padalka event was fine. The issue we had was that Gennady felt more comfortable controlling the presentation "manually" from his laptop keyboard, which did not lend itself to the usual remote option from front of stage.

That said, with all the house lights down and Gennady's voice "booming from above" it made in my opinion for a more impressive presentation.

Ken has been able to secure a special guest speaker for Space Lecture's April event. The name will be announced in the theatre immediately after Jack Lousma's lecture.

Dates and other details will be available shortly there after.

Ken Willoughby has opted to use the Skylab space station back drop for the Lousma event next month. I'm flattered and for the record, had no say in the selection.

But I have no intention of keeping the bespoke Lousma signed photo for myself so Mike Lambert, assuming you are attending the event please make yourself known to me (I will be assisting at the signing table). It may not be your design but I hope you will like your very own and unique signed piece as a memento of the event.

If you are not attending please drop me a line and I will personally see to it that the piece is mailed to you.

With a little over a week to go until the Jack Lousma event, might I suggest that anybody wishing to mop up some of the remaining tickets arrange with Ken to collect them on the door rather than risk any kind of postal delay. Be sure to bring ID on the day for collecting tickets in such circumstances.

Can I please remind attendees for the Jack Lousma lecture that the school will open its doors to the public at 2.00pm sharp on Saturday.

The venue will be in use by another group until this time so please respect their space and keep to the schedule.

Ken has confirmed that refreshments/caterers will be available from 2.00pm: the photo shoot will commence at 2.45pm.

I first met retired USMC Colonel Jack Lousma at Autographica many years ago. He struck me then as a modest, humble and self-deprecating hero... yet gregarious: traits I was delighted to find had not faded with the passage of time. For this trip Jack was accompanied by his daughter Mary. Supportive and encouraging both to her dad and the Space Lectures team Mary's warmth of character meant people naturally gravitated to her.

Jack spoke to nearly 1000 pupils over two days. Outwood Academy Carlton in Barnsley and Mount St. Mary's College in Sheffield the beneficiaries of Ken Willoughby's on going quest to inspire youngsters with stories of space adventures delivered first hand from the men and women that made them happen.

The reception and warmth of welcome was matched by the enthusiasm of the students. The Q&A that followed the first lecture in Barnsley for instance lasted longer than the presentation itself. The whole experience made a great impression on Jack, and Mary in particular. Following the Saturday lecture I asked Mary what had been the best part of her first visit to the UK? "Seeing all the youngsters hands going up" she replied, "and their enthusiasm for my dad's adventures so many years after they happened."

The schedule afforded Jack and Mary time to see some of the areas ancient and historic sites. No, not Ken Willoughby's wallet but Pontefract Castle. I was gobsmacked at David Jones' local knowledge. Our usual event compere was a mine of information: he would make a good teacher! Along with a suitcase stuffed with liquorice (a local delicacy) and Pontefract cakes, Jack and Mary will certainly return to the US with a flavour of the area.

Friday found the event shifting once again to Wentrbridge for the dinner and auction. (Please note that for Space Lectures' Ed Gibson event in April, the dinner and auction will be held at Kings Croft Hotel.) Things got off to a bad start when Mrs OWL (aka Julie McDermott) was taken seriously ill and hospitalized for the duration. That in turn meant that her husband Andrew (OWL) was switching to and fro from the hospital to the venue. Julie was greatly missed but in the best of traditions she told Andrew "the show must go on," and the team pulled together in an hour of need. In any case, Andrew knows his place.

Gene Kranz would have been proud of us.

It was nice to see so many new faces. First timers included Dwight and Alexandra Steven Boniecki. In addition to donating a choice auction piece the Boniecki's brought with them a selection of merchandise from their triumphant movie "Searching for Skylab." It transpires that Ed Gibson was instrumental in bringing the film to fruition: safe to say Dwight and Alexandra will be back in April, not least because they ran out of DVDs PDQ.

The lecture at Carlton Community High school was altogether smoother for the team than Gennady Padalka's event. The tech guys were on the ball from the get go and the new caterers brought a selection of mouth-watering cream cakes that I'm convinced added pounds just from looking at them. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Understandably, when Jack's Skylab Commander Alan Bean came to Pontefract in 2013, the Apollo 12 moon landing dominated: it was refreshing to see an in depth study of the ground breaking Skylab program: Jack's "warm up act" a brief STS-3 movie with a Willie Nelson soundtrack.

It quickly became evident why Dwight and Alexandra's movie has been so well received. Jack's lecture underlined just how influential Skylab had been in paving the way for the ISS and the long term manned exploration of space, in so doing re-writing the text books on Solar Astronomy.

Jack's humour found a receptive, knowledgeable audience and anecdotes were sprinkled throughout. If you ever bump in to Jack be sure to ask him about the "Skivvies" — on day 58 of his Skylab mission, or the peanut munching crewmate, and you will understand what raised the biggest laughs of the afternoon.

So familiar are the Space Lectures audience with the signing process that before we knew it Jack had finished the signing and he and Mary were leaving for the airport. Thankfully the days of 3 hour queues for an autograph are ancient history.

Another 7 months will find astronaut Ed Gibson in Pontefract. I'm looking forward to it already, not least because of the reported "mutinous" actions of the Skylab III crew: the inside story I'm certain will be worth the admission ticket alone.

Ken Willoughby has asked me to convey his appreciation to everybody that made this event a success. Without the support of our dinner guests, audience members, trade suppliers, schools, auction sponsors, Karen and James from Proffoto and of course team members, Space Lectures would have folded 12 years ago. The fact we are still going strong does everybody great credit.

I am pleased to confirm that Space Lectures has shared charitable donations worth £350 with UNICEF and the Fior Di Loto Foundation on the back of this event. Thank you! Get well soon Mrs OWL!

I was waiting for your always memorable report Rick. Yet another thoroughly enjoyable event and you just have to admire the enthusiasm of Jack Lousma and his ability to give his time to all who spoke to him. Marvelous at that age to take the trouble to come over the pond to speak to us. Definately made of the right stuff. His daughter too seemed very friendly.

So thank you once more to Ken and all his superb team for organising such a good presentation. Great catering this time. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mrs OWL and also for your compere to recover his voice in time for next April's event, for which we are already looking forward to.

Rick, reading your behind the scenes commentary always caps off these great events. I had a great time at Saturday's lecture, Ken and his team go from strength to strength. With that said I hope Mrs OWL is feeling better soon.

I'm already looking forward to meeting Ed Gibson in April.

I hope Ken will not mind my sharing an e-mail he received from Jack the day after he arrived home in Kerville.
We really enjoyed our visit and all of the events. We thank you for all you did to make our travel, speaking events, and social activities pleasant and meaningful. I thought the speaking audiences were strategically selected to effectively convey my space-related messages. The events were well-planned and organized, and the listeners seemed attentive and interested. I did not realize the Carleton High School event would be primarily for adults, so we improvised a bit upon arrival to add some “fun” and a bit of Space Shuttle-related info to the presentation.

The Wentbridge was a pleasant, quiet, and delightful place to stay, and we thank you for accommodating us in such grand style!

All things considered, that is, the schedule, audiences, pace, organization, people, events, locations, transportation, photo-shoots, banquet, auction, autograph sessions, ambiance, lodging, Castle visit, and even the weather were top-notch! Please accept for yourself and convey our gratitude to all for their friendship, patience, hospitality, and extra effort in welcoming us and in making our visit pleasant, worthwhile, and memorable.

I think it safe to say Jack and Mary enjoyed themselves.

A slight hiccup and an emergency visit to hospital meant I missed the Lousma event but with thanks to Rick I lived all those missed moments. Thank you 🙏 It looked amazing and that is credit due to the small band of brothers that are team Space Lectures. As Ken would say ... ‘The A Team’ 🚀🚀🚀🚀

A huge thank you to all whom have sent wishes, I was overwhelmed. Here”s to April. See you there!
