AIAA held its 2016 Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition during the week of June 13-17, 2016 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. On Friday, June 17, a Forum 360 degree session titled "Hypersonic and Re-Entry Flight Testing: X-15 to Space Shuttle and Beyond" was open to the public. The panelists were Dr. Sandra Magnus, Gen. Joe Engle, Doug Cooke, Col. Lee Archambault, and John Olson.

The lecture began with Gen. Engle talking about X-15 flights and telling some stories about his piloting the X-15 and the shuttle. Mr. Cooke then talked about the approach and landing tests flights of the Enterprise during 1977. Gen. Engle also shared some stories about flying the Enterprise.

Col. Archambault spoke about the winged Dream Chaser being built by Sierra Nevada Corporation and now scheduled to begin unmanned cargo flights to the ISS in 2019. Mr. Olson talked about development and flight testing of new aircraft.

An emphasis was made about the need to test the unknowns in the development of new aircraft and spacecraft in order to minimize the risks of unforeseen problems. Also, during the presentation Gen. Engle announced that he will be undergoing hip-replacement surgery this week. Let's wish him a speedy recovery!

A Q&A session followed. Afterwards the panelists mingled with the audience and answered questions. Col. Archambault discussed the flight plan of the Dream Chaser resupplying the ISS with me. Copies of a book about the X-15 were given to those who attended and Gen. Engle graciously signed the books for all who desired a signed copy. I found the event to be very interesting and informative.
