Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum release Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Celebrates 27th Annual Fleet WeekThe Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum celebrates the 27th annual Fleet Week, to be held from May 20–May 26, 2015. Fleet Week is America's premier tribute and "thank you" to the men and women who serve in the armed forces. Fleet Week activities at the Intrepid Museum are proudly supported by Coca-Cola. The following Fleet Week activities will be held inside the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and on Pier 86 (46 Street and 12 Avenue, Manhattan). Events on the pier are free and open to the public; events in the Museum are free with Museum admission. This year's special events and displays include: Meet the Pilots Saturday, May 23, 2015, 12:30pm Meet three distinguished aviators and discover first-hand what it takes to pilot the aircraft exhibited on Intrepid. Military officers, test pilots, veterans of combat, and NASA astronauts, Scott D. Altman, Ron Garan, and Greg C. Johnson have flown some of the most sophisticated and groundbreaking aircraft and spacecraft ever developed. Join them as they share their thrilling flying stories with friend and former NASA colleague Mike Massimino, now Senior Advisor, Space Programs at Intrepid and Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, Columbia University. Program is free with museum admission. Learn more about the aircraft on the flight deck following the program: - 11:30am–12:00pm: Scott D. Altman
- 2:00pm–2:30pm: Ron Garan
- 2:30pm–3:00pm: Greg C. Johnson
- 3:00pm: Join former astronaut and author Ron Garan for a discussion and signing of his book, The Orbital Perspective in the Lutnick Theater. Free with museum admission.
Throughout the day, Pier 86 will host displays and hands-on activities from NASA, the Office of Naval Research, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, the American Legion and the American Red Cross. Four U.S. Naval Academy Yard Patrol boats will be open for free public tours. Live demonstrations, scavenger hunts and a family aviation gallery walk will be presented by Intrepid Museum educators, and free Fleet Week themed Tour Guide Talks will take place on the hangar deck. Fleet Week activities also include the kickoff of the Intrepid's annual Summer Movie Series with a screening of "Top Gun" introduced by Scott Altman (he was the flying double for Maverick (Tom Cruise) in the film) on May 22 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be special talks by NASA (speakers to be announced) on May 24. |

That's interesting because an earlier version of their website merely said "Greg Johnson," without specifying which one. Now there's no mention of him, just Altman and Garan. |

Anyone attend these events in the past? I know the astronauts will not sign autographs and that's fine. I am wondering if there will be a chance to meet them and possibly get a picture with them. I suppose the crowds will be rather large though. Sounds fun in any case and I am thinking of making the trip. |

Not this particular event before, but yes, have attended other events on the Intrepid. Sometimes they'll be walking around and you can talk to them, as what happened with Mario Runco and Joe Edwards the last time I was there. Others during that same event, like Terry Hart and Bo Bobko, were only at their designated place. Not sure what I can say other than "prepare for the best, expect the worst," e.g., enjoy the museum and the chance to see them but don't get too excited at the chance to meet them. If it happens, it happens. And yes, I have attended previous Fleet Weeks (not on the Intrepid) and that area can get crowded. I don't think you'll have big draws like the Wisconsin or JFK or America as when I went, but people still like seeing the smaller ships. |

Yes it depends on what event is happening in and around the Intrepid. In one of two upcoming events there, another NASA astronaut will be making an appearence: Pam Melroy will be interviewed by journalist Lyn Sherr on July 26, in another Meet the Pilots program as part of the annual Space and Science Festival July 23-26. In past years that I attended, they had dedicated times for astronaut signings inside the hangar deck. Not sure if more astronauts will come. And from May 27-31, as part of World Science Festival, the Intrepid will host the NASA Reaching New Heights pavilion. Although a write-up claimed 'astronauts' would attend, they did not mention names. |

I believe Michael Lopez-Alegria will be on the Intrepid as part of World Science Festival. |

Darn it! My timing is lousy. I visited the USS Intrepid last Tuesday (19th May) but by 12.30pm last Saturday I was heading home from Washington DC. Still, the Intrepid is well worth visiting at any time, with a British Airways Concorde, an SR-71 "Blackbird", a flown Soyuz capsule, and of course the amazing "Haisemobile", shuttle "Enterprise." This was also my first visit to an aircraft carrier. It is a very impressive sight! |

I was there on Saturday and had a great time. They gave a great talk and did hang around and give autographs if you asked. People did get up and leave because it was a half an hour talk. Always hope for the best... |

Nice event at the Intrepid this past weekend. I caught the talk by Garan, Johnson and Altman moderated by Massimino in the Hangar Deck; good insight into how they went thru flight training in their respective branches (Air Force for Garan, Navy for the other two), and their astronaut selection. They brought up the fact that of the four, three became Hollywood 'stars' of a sort: Altman as Tom Cruise's F-14 pilot double in Top Gun; Garan flew a jet during filming of Iron Eagle in 1985; and of course Massimino appeared in the TV series Big Bang Theory several times.Johnson humorously related how the Marine DI (drill instructor) in the film An Officer and a Gentleman was WAY kinder than the one in his Navy OCS class. Both he and Altman served aboard the carrier Carl Vinson, but in different cruises. Afterwards, they were on the topside flight deck next to aircraft they flew: A-6 Intruder for Johnson, and F-16 for Garan (Altman appeared earlier, next to an F-14). Garan gave his talk tied to his book The Orbital Perspective, showing a brief video of his training and launch aboard a Soyuz to the ISS. I also took in the new Hubble@25 exhibit in the Enterprise pavilion. Looking forward to seeing Pam Melroy at the annual Space & Science festival at the Intrepid. | |
