Suiting Up for a Spacewalk: A Starry Night in the National Air and Space Museum

Friday, March 20, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

As we look forward to shedding our winter layers for spring, join us to explore the layers you'd need to survive in space. In continuing the celebration of 50 years of extra-vehicular activity in our new exhibition, Outside the Spacecraft, the Museum will host a final after-hours event in the gallery that will provide an intimate look at an astronaut's own personal spacecraft and a universal symbol of the Space Age: the spacesuit.

Learn how spacesuit technology allows humans to float, walk, and work in the dangerous space environment. Come to the gallery to examine a spacesuit to see the layering and types of materials involved. And take the opportunity to try on different pieces of a spacesuit to feel their protection and limitations.

Gallery curator Jennifer Levasseur will be joined by Museum curator Cathy Lewis and conservator Lisa Young, to discuss spacesuit technology with our special guest, Bobby Jones, a design engineer for spacesuit technologies at ILC Dover.

Have your photo taken in a spacesuit by one of the Museum's official photographers in our photo booth and enjoy sampling out-of-this-world hors d'oeuvres and beverages that will include a delicious twist to our layering theme.

All times are CT (US)
