Museum of Flight release The Wings of Heroes Gala: A Salute to Human Space ExplorationFrom the X-15 to the Space Shuttle and Beyond
Saturday evening, September 22, 2012 A black-tie gala to honor an extraordinary and historic gathering of human space exploration trailblazers from the past 50 years and to celebrate the grand opening of The Museum of Flight's Charles Simonyi Space Gallery, the future home of NASA's Full-Fuselage Space Shuttle Trainer and the Soyuz Capsule. Here is a preliminary lineup of the astronauts and NASA personalities appearing at the Seattle Museum of Flight on September 22. - Mercury Astronauts: Scott Carpenter

Does anyone have any information on how these events have worked in the past? Nothing about the event is on the website but when I called they said that there will be book signings and appearances the following day on the 23rd. |

Argh! Curses, my wife and I will be out of town on that day! Funny how the MoF's website has nothing on it that I could find.

I've lived in the Puget Sound area since 1998 and I don't remember ever hearing of anything like this there before, but then again my interest in space stuff was recently re-lit... |

It's been a while but the last one was class "A". I am a tad stymied about this one though: X-15 Pilots: Gen. Joe Engle, Einar Enevoldson I must have missed something somewhere.  |

The Wings of Heroes Gala has been held before (for example, 2009 gala honored the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11). The museum has also hosted similar black tie events, like the Rendezvous in Space Gala in 2000.This year's gala celebrates the opening of the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery. Here's a description provided by the museum: A special presentation of the Deke Slayton Astronaut pin will be the highlight of the evening as this famous piece of space history is officially accessioned into the Museum collection.More than 1,000 Museum of Flight supporters as well as air and space industry leaders are expected to attend the event, which takes place in a giant tent adjacent to the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery. In addition to an entertaining and inspiring program that pays tribute to human space exploration and honors the legendary trailblazers in attendance, there will be a short live auction of space-related items. Prior to the evening program, attendees will be served a sumptuous gourmet meal accompanied by fine wines. Also attendees will be given a special VIP tour of the new Charles Simonyi Space Gallery, and the Soyuz Capsule in advance of the official grand opening. Presentations, book signings and other events open to the public related to the Gala theme of a salute to human space exploration are being planned to occur in the tent on Sunday, September 23rd, the day following the Gala. Individual tickets begin at $350 at the Supporting level, $500 for Patron and $1,000 as a Benefactor. Table sponsorship begins at $5,000. The Museum of Flight's goal is to raise $1 million from the evening to support its educational programs. |

Nice! I'll be there as a volunteer greeter. I've done these yearly gala events for several years now. Missed one a few years ago, but I was in Florida for the STS-117 launch and the Autograph show. |

I can remember a good friend of mine attending a black tie event at the Seattle museum several years ago. He got an unbelievable photo of him and the astronauts. It was well deserved as this good friend does an incredible amount of work promoting space and space education... and then I saw the border of this photo which knocked my astro-socks off. | |
