Cape Gazette: Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame to induct 6 new members
Theodore C. Freeman (1930-64) of Lewes, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate who completed his secondary education in his hometown. He entered the NASA space program and became one of its first astronauts. He earned 2,000 jet hours and was killed when a collision with a snow goose shattered his jet canopy on a landing approach.
The hall's newsletter also states that Freeman might have become America's first man on the moon...

According to the hall's website, people are selected for the honor by the hall's board of trustees on the basis of public nomination. (According to the 2005 NASA Astronaut Fact Book, Nancy Currie is the only other astronaut with claims to Delaware, where she was born.)

Having been involved with members of the Freeman family for many years as a result of writing about him in "Fallen Astronauts," it is wonderful to see him being honoured in this way. Thank you for letting us know, Hart.

While saying he might have been the first man on the moon may be quite some stretch, just consider this; it was rumoured prior to his death that Freeman was going to be named on the backup crew of Gemini 9 (along with Tom Stafford) to support his good friend Charlie Bassett. Had Freeman, Bassett and See not died in T-38 crashes, Freeman (if the reports were correct) would have flown on Gemini 12 under the then-prevailing selection system instead of Buzz Aldrin. It can only remain as unsupported conjecture, but it's certainly an interesting thought.

However I do believe that Freeman would have gone to the moon had he lived - possibly as LMP to Bassett.

I attended the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame induction of Ted Freeman. It was wonderful to hear his daughter Faith talk about how this was one of the few events she has ever attended that celebrated his life and not marked his death. Large kudos go out to Ted's boyhood friend Joe Hudson and Joe's friend Jim Vreeland for their efforts to get Ted in the hall. Delaware's only astronaut finally gets his due!!

All times are CT (US)
