There was a panel discussion at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's 2009 Astronaut Autograph and Memorabilia show with Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, and the Kansas Cosmosphere is planning an event in April: What else is happening to remember Apollo 13? |

I know it's a bit early - but has anyone heard of any of the plans surrounding Apollo 13's 40th anniversary?Has anyone heard if NASA will provide similar coverage to that of Apollo 11 (including the "as it happened" air-to-ground audio website)? Any TV specials or publications? I am guessing that the BBC Sky at Night magazine will provide full coverage as it usually does. |

In their 2010 calendar of events, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation has an Apollo 13 anniversary celebration listed for April 8. I have no idea whether this is a full blown gala, or just an observance. |

At the Apollo 13 luncheon at the ASF show in November, Fred Haise (if I remember correctly) mentioned people coming back for the anniversary event, so I believe it will be a gala of some kind, at the very least. |

That is something I would like to see. My father and I enjoyed sitting on the porch in the evenings listening to Apollo 11 on the laptop. |

There was a reason for me starting this forum. That is the possibility of an Apollo 13 event here in Downey. While I can't say much yet, as so much is a last minute scramble, we want to focus on the engineer- heroes that saved the crew and the mission. The idea is similar to what happened here last summer, with a reunion of the North American-Rockwell and TRW vets, telling their stories, showing their artifacts and getting together with younger up-and-coming engineers and FANS to be here and listen. Is anyone interested in coming? |

Sounds like a great idea for an event Jim, and if it comes together and I can swing it, I'd definitely be interested in attending. |

I have been hearing about some of the events the Cosmosphere has planned for the Apollo 13 anniversary. They sound fantastic!! I also understand that if you are a member of the Cosmosphere, you will get a chance to purchase the tickets to the Apollo 13 events a week earlier than the general public can purchase the tickets. Sounds like a real good reason to have a membership in the Cosmosphere! Time to join!!! |

Just to bolster what Leon wrote, the Sightings calendar has been updated with the latest guest list and more events will be added soon.I can also share that through the generosity of a collectSPACE member, the Cosmosphere and collectSPACE are now working together to deliver on a related project that should be of interest to our readers. |

Anyone going to the Cosmosphere's Apollo 13 celebration in April?I'll be there, with any luck, and if the price is right would love to attend the dinner and related events. Any member here and of the Cosmosphere know any pricing details yet? I can't see anything on the site. I think Wichita airport is the better bet, and hire a car - any advice on if that's a stupid idea? There would be potential to meet up and drive to the museum together - I intend on spending a whole day there, either the Saturday to include the meal in the evening, or the Friday if just to visit the museum and hence avoid the Saturday crowds, depending on cost of the events. |

My wife Kathy and I are members (I also guide tours there) and we will be at all events with at least two other guests. Look forward to meeting other cS'ers. There was a question about airports. Wichita is 40 miles from Cosmosphere. Kansas City is 225 miles, and Dallas is 350 miles. We live very near the Wichita airport and would be glad to host anyone or help with arrangements. If you are not a member of Cosmosphere, consider going immediately online and joining. As noted above it will save you up to $60 on Dinner and Reception. Further, there will only be 300 tickets for dinner, and 100 for reception and members have, I believe, until Feb. 15 to order before the tickets are open to public. Robert, can you tell us anymore about your Cosmosphere plans noted above? |

The Cosmosphere has confirmed they are now completely sold out for the gala dinner tickets and VIP packages. They are running a waiting list, but it's already fairly long.If you wanted to attend and didn't get tickets, the Cosmosphere will be hosting several other events during the day that will be open to larger numbers. Details will be announced in the coming weeks. |

"Los Angeles - you have a celebration" is the word here. Actually three events, with an introduction by Captain James Lovell, by video from Chicago! First, there will be an American Institute of Astronautics and Astronautics event at the L.A. Marriott Hotel on April 13th, 2010. This will be limited to AIAA members, I believe. Then on April 16 there will be a lecture at the Los Angeles Science Fair by Apollo 13 North American Rockwell (Boeing) and TRW (Northrop-Grumman) alumni, open to the public. And April 17, here at the former Rockwell Int. Downey site a reunion of Apollo 13 engineering alumni and veterans, hosted by Aerospace Legacy Foundation. All former employees of Apollo are invited and there will be LIMITED public attendance, as we are on a working studio here. There will also be displays of people's collections. Many things are still being decided: is it to be a luncheon? Price if it is? To get in on all these call and get on the list: Aerospace Legacy Foundation, Kathy Blackburn, 562-922-8068. I look forward to seeing you at our celebrations! J M Busby Aerospace Legacy Foundation Downey, CA. |

National Air and Space Museum calendar Annual John H. Glenn Lecture 40th Anniversary of Apollo 13 Thursday, April 15, 8:00 pm Lockheed Martin Imax Theater, National Mall Building Admission: Free, Tickets RequiredForty years after Apollo 13, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum welcomes Apollo 13 mission commander Jim Lovell, lunar module pilot Fred Haise, Apollo 16 command module pilot Ken Mattingly, and mission controller Gene Kranz for a panel discussion about that historic mission. Intended to be the third human landing on the Moon, Apollo 13’s flight plan changed dramatically when an explosion aboard the service module forced them to abandon the lunar landing. The dramatic rescue plan and quick-thinking fixes to life-threatening challenges that brought the three astronauts safely back to Earth made Apollo 13 famous as a “successful failure.” Even those too young to remember firsthand that dramatic week in April 1970 still know this history from the best-selling books written by some of its participants and the blockbuster major motion picture Apollo 13 (1995). Come hear the real history from the men who lived it. Join these distinguished speakers for a panel discussion of Apollo 13 forty years after its successful conclusion. The speakers will not be signing autographs at the lecture. The lecture will take place in the IMAX Theater and will be simulcast to overflow seating in the museum. The Director of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, John Glenn and the evening’s speakers will visit each overflow area prior to the lecture for a brief welcome to the overflow guests. Ticketing: Requests for tickets will be taken by web request from Monday, March 8 – Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Up to 4 tickets can be requested. All requests received during this time will be entered into a random drawing for seats.* All requesters are eligible for theater seating, overflow seating or standby and will be notified via email of their placement by April 9, 2009. Requesters receiving standby status will be updated via email a few days before the lecture on whether the museum expects overflow seating to be available due to cancelations. Duplicate requests will not be honored. Tickets will not be distributed through the Museum Box Office for this event. Beginning Monday, March 8 at 10:00 a.m., please go to our ticket reservation form to make your request. * Due to high demand for Glenn Lecture tickets, the museum is using a drawing to provide more people the chance of attending. |

Only a handful of VIP ticket packages remain to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation’s Apollo XIII 40th Anniversary Celebration. This event of a lifetime features an exclusive astronaut-guided drive-by of the launch pad; a private briefing by Flight Director Gene Kranz in a mock Firing Room; a photo-op with Fred Haise and Jim Lovell; and dinner under a Saturn V rocket as the astronauts and space icons re-live the remarkable mission by sharing their most personal memories. |

Can you swing it, Robert? It is getting better here in bits and pieces: AIAA is now preparing to show "Apollo 13" (the Howard, Hanks) movie at a local theatre in Los Angeles. There will be a space memorabilia set up and a space vendors spot with rare collectibles. I will report more after Thursday's meeting, as I hope to see the California fans here! |

Cradle of Aviation Museum release Come Celebrate "Long Island's Finest Hour..." Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 13 with Fred Haise and Joe Gavin -- Saturday, April 24thOn April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 launched what was to be the third mission to the moon. Two days into the mission there was an explosion in the Service Module and the phrase "Houston We Have a Problem" was heard around the world. The Grumman-built Lunar Module "Aquarius" was used as a "lifeboat" for Cmdr. Jim Lovell, LM Pilot Fred Haise and CM Pilot Jack Swigert until they could safely return to Earth. This became the "finest hour" for Long Islanders. Hundreds of Grumman engineers worked around the clock figuring how to keep the Lunar Module functioning as the "lifeboat" until the Command Module could bring them home. Three days later, the crew was preparing to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and Houston's Mission Control was expressing the proud feeling of all Grummanites for their creation when they heard "Farewell, Aquarius, and we thank you." The Cradle of Aviation Museum is proud to host a celebration of this very special achievement on Saturday, April 24, with a special showing of the IMAX version of Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks in our IMAX Dome Theater, followed by a dinner and panel discussion with Apollo 13 Astronaut Fred Haise, and former Grumman President Joe Gavin, who was in charge of the Apollo Program. - Date: Saturday, April 24th
- Time: Special screening of IMAX film at 3:30pm
Dinner followed by panel discussion at 6:30pm
- Admission: $50 per person for film, dinner and discussion
- RSVP: By April 20th, 516-572-4066
Special tickets for $100 includes a VIP reception with Fred Haise and Joe Gavin Seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve your seat, please call reservations at 516-572-4066. |

No luck here -- sitting on standby. For those who got tickets in the theater, a word of caution to prevent you from getting your hopes too high and then being disappointed. It is possible that, at the last minute if the National Air and Space Museum needs seats in the theater for some VIPs, sponsors, etc., you could get bumped to overflow. It is also possible that they fixed this issue, but it happened to me and a number of others at the Neil Armstrong event a couple years ago (another John Glenn lecture). My advice would be to go to the event hopeful that your theater seats will pan out, but if they don't then be content that you were there and, likely, that you at least got to see the guys when they stop by overflow seating. If you get in the theater, be happy, but try not to pin your entire expectations for the evening on that -- or you could easily end up disappointed. |

I just found out about a special fundraising event for Chicago's Adler Planetarium marking the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 13. Jim Lovell is closely affiliated with the planetarium, which features a number of his space artifacts. The event is Tuesday, April 13 and features Lovell, Fred Haise, Frank Borman, Bill Anders, Tom Stafford, Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan, Mike Collins and the flight directors of Apollo 13 (Kranz, Griffin, Lunney, Windler) among other luminaries, according to the invitation. Tickets for the fundraiser, which includes a reception, dinner and program, are $1,000. This is not cheap but the proceeds go to the science education programs of the planetarium. I called today and tickets are still available. Since I cannot go to any other space events this year and the ticket price goes to charity, I will be there. |

What a great event - like you said, pricey, but if someone can make one big donation to a worthy cause each year or so, that one certainly provides for a wonderful evening. Have fun! (I see they've added Richard Gordon to the invitation.) |
