St Louis native Bob Behnken (STS-123) and Megan McArthur (STS-125) made a stop at the McDonnell Planetarium at the St Louis Science Center to sign photos and visit with some of Behnken's hometown fans. Surprisingly, the event wasn't very well publicized; in fact, had I not been heading to the St Louis Science Center anyway, I would not have known.

While standing in line to talk to Lt. Col. Behnken, I noticed someone who looked remarkably like Megan McArthur walk up to the table where he was signing. She was dressed in plain civilian clothes, and was not listed as making an appearance. I wasn't certain it was her until a SLSC official introduced his son to Dr. McArthur.

So, two for one!

They were both very friendly and generous in their answers to questions. Dr. McArthur mostly stood away from the signing table, and was gracious enough to discuss topics ranging from the STS-125 mission, to abort modes, to her post-Shuttle career plans. Since she wasn't signing (and most people had no idea who she was), my girlfriend and I were fortunate to have about 10 minutes to talk to her.

All in all, it was an extremely pleasant surprise, and a great experience.

Here are a couple of photos from the event:
