For those with Sirius , Buzz Aldrin appeared on the Howard Stern show this morning in the 6:30 (CT) hour. It will replay at various times throughout the day. Some silliness, but it was nice to hear Buzz talk so openly about his life. |

From TMZ.com: quote: Legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin went on Howard Stern's radio show on Thursday Wednesday to discuss walking on the moon, serving in the military and his recent cosmetic surgery. Houston, he had a problem -- with his droopy jaw!The NASA alum, 77, was the second person to walk on the moon and spent 21 years in active duty -- so what better way to enjoy your retirement than plastic surgery?! Ask Joan Rivers! When the shock jock asked the Apollo 11 pilot why he went under the knife now, Buzz responded, "I'm in La La land ... I have a trophy wife." How charming is this love story?! For better, for worse or ... until your flappy chin hits the floor! We have lift off!

Sometimes, these are the only forums where personalities can go on the air and talk, at length, about their current projects or the books they've just written, or whatever it is they're there to do. More mainstream venues like the "Today" show will only give a handful of chopped-up, too-brisk minutes, and that's only if they'll let you in the door to begin with. There used to be more places for these kinds of conversations on the air, like Tom Snyder's various programs and the original incarnation of "Later" with Bob Costas, but they've disappeared. So, places like Stern's show and "Charlie Rose" (and Imus, until that was cancelled) are about the last places in broadcasting any longer where you'll find conversation and more in-depth interviews where people can open up, get off their talking points or highlights, and be themselves. I'm no fan of Stern by any means, but I will give him credit for that. jodie |

Why exactly do we need to know about his palstic surgery or the reason for it? It's this type of programming that keeps Paris Hilton in the headlines while Shuttle flights get barely a mention! |

That is true. There are not many national shows that will have the Apollo guys on at this point and time. Howard had Buzz on to promote his latest venture (He is endorsing a company that has time-share condos in Florida and Las Vagas. It is the same company that uses Tonya Roberts and Eddie Munster to promote their properties. You may have heard some of these ads.).
The interview itself was very good. Howard was in awe of Buzz and kept telling him numerous times that he thinks Buzz is a national hero and should be respected more by the general population. There was some silliness, about Buzz's divorces and facelift, but Buzz answered every question with candor. There was also some great discussion about his war experiences; weightlessness; the Apollo program; the decision that Neil should egress first; etc. I am not defending Howard Stern, but it was a great interview because Buzz answered every question with no hesitation and with honest responses. (It would also seem that Howard and his staff are closet space fans - his producer even mentioned just finishing the Hansen Armstrong biography). The most amazing thing, however, were the number of callers and comments from people that had never heard of Buzz after the interview (This continued into the next day). A number of people were calling the show to express how cool they thought Buzz was and how they had no idea of anything about him. Howard was telling these people that they need to know about their national treasures such as Buzz. I know on this board we feel as if everyone knows about the space program. But a vast number of the mainstream society has no idea. Hopefully, Buzz's appearance inspired a few folks to learn more about the history of the program. |
