A great event I would like to plug here. The New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame in Teterboro Airport, a museum that I sporadicly do some volunteer work for is holding a Wings and Wheels Expo on Aug 19-20, 2006. It is a show of modern and classic aircraft. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly will be appearing with his NASA T-38 aircraft. It should be a great event and the Kelly appearance makes it a great excuse for anyone in the area to finally come by. The Museum has inducted New Jersey astronauts Wally Schirra, Buzz Aldrin, and Rusty Schweickart as members in the past. |

It appears as though Scott Kelly will be there on Sunday only due to a personal scheduling issue. The Museum had hoped to get him for both days (his plane will be available to look at both days I am told) but he will only be there on Sunday. |

Scott Kelly's fellow STS-118 astronaut Rick Mastracchio has been added to this event's line-up: NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Rick Mastracchio, scheduled to fly aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour for the STS-118 mission next year, will be featured guests at the Wings & Wheels Expo Aug. 20 at Teterboro Airport in Teterboro, N.J. The event is free and open to the public. It has drawn as many as 7,000 people in the past. Kelly, commander of the upcoming mission, and Mastracchio, a mission specialist and spacewalker on STS-118, will sign autographs and answer questions from the public. A New Jersey native, Kelly served as pilot on STS-103 in 1999 and has logged more than 191 hours in space. He is assigned as the space station branch chief within the Astronaut Office. Mastracchio, who grew up in Waterbury, Conn., traveled 4.9 million miles and logged more than 283 hours in space on the Space Shuttle Atlantis for the STS-106 mission in 2000. Wings & Wheels Expo is presented by the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey and by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a service for the community and to support educational programs for area schools and residents. |

It was great!Scott signed the five photos I had, and posed for a picture. I had three pictures of Rick. He signed two, and refused to sign the third. It was of him after taking off his helmet in a T-38. He said that he didn't sign bad pictures. He did take a picture with me too. I think Scott had his wife there. He seemed to enjoy my pictures. He was explaining to me and his wife what the pictures are of. Suit Up, Closeout, Tank Driving. It was a great day. |

Just got back from the Expo at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.Scott Kelly and Rick Mastracchio, both assigned to STS-118, were there signing autographs, and posing for pictures. There was a NASA T-38 jet (No. 02) on site, which Kelly used as a background for photos and autographs. I noticed Mastracchio was wearing his "old" STS-117 mission patch. On a side note... there was a B-17 there that was used to take passengers on a 30 minute ride around the New York City area, for $425. I passed on the "ride", but had a great time! |

Seemed to be a good turn-out — glad you enjoyed it. I did introduce myself to a few who were waiting, but no cS members. Did anyone make it over to the other side of the airport to see the Museum?Mastracchio and Kelly were both terrific to meet but the highlight of our day was seeing the inside of the B-17. It was the best $5 I ever spent. I was sure tempted to pay the $425 for the ride in it but I was already late for my NFL Fantasy draft. It was a tough decision though! The pilot told me that he circles the Statue of Liberty and comes back. About 45 mins total. Did anyone take the ride? |

I didn't go to the museum, or on the B-17 flight, but it was still great.I also got to see the inside of the B-17. That was pretty cool. I didn't have the chance to talk to the pilot since he was being interviewed, but I never saw the inside of one of those before. Did you notice all those Civil Air Patrol Cadets? I am one of those in the NY division. I actually flew a Cessna 172 with the CAP markings on it just like the one they had, last Friday. My squadron leader is a retired AF Colonel. He is trying to get us a flight in a C-130. The highlight of my day still has to be meeting Scott and Rick. They were so nice, and willing to sign anything you handed them. Except pictures they didn't like! Did Scott stay in front of the T-38 the entire time? He was complaining that he needed to go in the shade with Rick. They're astronauts! There's absolutely nothing to complain about! |

Jay, Had a great time. First I would like to thank the person who handed out GREAT photos of the two astronauts to the cub scouts for autographs. You can ID the cubs at the show because they were the ones walking around with these gigantic shuttle books to get signed. Mike, that that very attractive lady with Scott was a friend he went to high school with. Scott told me his flight (STS-118) has a scheduled date of June 07. |

Tony, I am glad you had a good time. I know you and I have talked about you and the scouts coming to see the facility for some time now. Did any of the scouts try climbing the rock wall? |

Jay, they all went up the wall. It was the first stop of the day.We got there at 10:00 a.m., the astronauts came at about 11:30 a.m., so we had free time to do it all. They spent about an hour building model planes and flying them around the hangar. |

My daughter and I also had a very nice visit with the astronauts. Both signed for her and took the time to ask her questions. My question for the them was what their mission was going to be, and they explained all the rest of the missions to ISS. They will be installing segment S5 of the truss, between the two solar arrays on the other side of the station. STS-116 will do the same on the side that they are currently working on, and also install the out board arrays which are already stored on the station. STS-117 will bring and install the S3 truss and solar arrays next spring. And their flight will also bring up the ESA lab module. Rick was much more willing to just chat, but in defense of them both we hit them at the end of the day and they looked tired. All in all a fun and worthwhile day. |
