 | posted 01-28-2006 06:21 AM Concerning the folowing passage of Griffin's message (thanks to Robert for posting it):
quote:Some of my colleagues at Johnson Space Center thought that the sentence "There are places in Arlington Cemetery, and elsewhere, waiting for others who have yet to pay the ultimate price for our human failings" was insensitive on the part of Mr. Griffin. I personally didn't agree with them, but it illustrated once again that there is almost no phrase or thought that cannot be taken "the wrong way" by someone else. But as we remember those who have fallen, we must also honor them by acknowledging, humbly, that they cannot be the last. We have not made our last mistake in learning the art and science of spaceflight. There are places in Arlington Cemetery, and elsewhere, waiting for others who have yet to pay the ultimate price for our human failings. We do not know who, or why, or when, but it will come. We pray, today, that it will be a very long time. Let us on this Day of Remembrance honor our lost companions by resolving to make it so.[/b]

Does anyone else think that was a bad bit of phraselogy? ------------------John Charles

 | posted 01-28-2006 10:39 AM To think that there will never be another space fatality would be ignorant of the history of manned flight..so I agree with Griff's comments, and don't feel that they were insensitive.

I understand your concern but let me tell you about something said at the Re-Dedication of the Astronaut Memorial on October 28, 2003 honoring the Columbia crew. A gentleman went to the podium and gave a moving tribute to the crew and then said (and I won't quote - but try to capture the tone)... we have to decide are we a space-faring or space fearing country for surely more names will be added to this monument. That gentleman: John Clark husband of Laurel Clark Mission Specialist aboard Columbia. So I think Mr. Griffin was trying to convey the same thought. There will be more losses just as we lost people during western expansion of the country, in aviation, and on the street everyday. All we can do is our best to ensure that it doesn't happen again. | posted 01-30-2006 08:30 AM This is always a time of mixed feelings for me, as January 28 is my birthday. I was turning 11 when the Apollo 1 crew perished, and I vividly recall the news coverage of that day.
I think Griffin's remarks were eloquent and quite appropriate. May the crews of Apollo 1, Challenger STS-51L, and Columbia STS-107 rest in peace. ------------------John Fongheiser

 | posted 02-01-2006 07:40 AM I framed their patch surrounded by a black border the day it happened and added it to my Apollo 1 and Challenger patches on my desk at work. I don't ever want to add another to the display....Godspeed the crew of STS 107.
