I agree Brian, it was a good summary and explanation of the challenges that NASA faced (and still faces) before STS-114 could launch. I was particularly interested to see footage of the work on the ET foam application and tile repair techniques, that outside of NASA B-roll I have not seen appear elsewhere. Lora Bailey, who is interviewed extensively throughout the two hours about her team's tile and RCC repair techniques, is a friend of a friend but until tonight I wasn't fully aware her leading role in the effort. (And for any eagle-eyed viewers, yours truly makes a very brief appearance in one of the scenes, though I'll leave it to you to figure out which one... <G> ). Well, I guess I'll have to go back through and take a look..It was interesting to see all of the repair techniques that are being tested. I can understand their rational for using the "goo" technique as a last resort. The problem with the bubbles is a very understandable concern. The one concern I have was the narrator's mentioning that none of the repair techniques will be certified by the time they fly. Even with two more months of delay, it is still a concern to me..I know I would feel better flying with a certified repair technique but that certification may never come. Like the shuttle director said, they can't let fear keep them grounded. [This message has been edited by HouseDadX4 (edited May 16, 2005).] |

NASA held a spacewalk media briefing back in February that in part addressed the issue of certification. We had a chance to speak directly with those overseeing the various repair techniques and as it was explained, regardless the the length of preparation time given, pre-flight certification might be impossible for some of the methods proposed. Only testing during real space flight - or perhaps even a real reentry (which is not planned for 114, 121 or any subsequent mission) could then lead to the method being certified for use. Steve Robinson was asked during that same briefing if he would be prepared to use these new techniques if the situation arose on 114 that damage to the orbiter was detected. He replied, "We don't want to have the first test be with us inside." [This message has been edited by Robert Pearlman (edited May 16, 2005).] |
