Dick Gordon was at the Phoenix International Raceway for the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Winston Cup events Nov. 1 and 2. He's a huge race fan, and I worked on a couple of media opportunities with him for the appearance. The following are photographs from those two days: Dick Gordon and Rick Houston, Collectspace reader and manager of communications for the NASCAR Busch Series. Capt. Gordon in NASCAR's "chase vehicle," during downtime on the race track. Dennis Dillard, the pace car driver for the NASCAR Busch Series, explains an inspection procedure to Capt. Gordon. |

The second pace car, which is used to set the pit road speed speed for the second half of the starting grid, pulls onto pit road with Capt. Gordon as a passenger just prior to the start of the race. With his windows partially down, Capt. Gordon remarked about how loud the cars around him had been. This from a man who'd been on board a launching Saturn V. Capt. Gordon is interviewed during a rain delay by veteran MRN anchor Barney Hall. Capt. Gordon holds the attention of chase vehicle driver Carl Simmons. This man... this man is one of 24 who made the journey to the moon. |

Simmons and Capt. Gordon. Jeff Gordon, whose car is being prepared in the background, is actually no relation to Capt. Gordon, although the former astronaut jokingly tells people that the four-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion is his grandson. Brian Vickers, at the ripe old age of 20, clinched the NASCAR Busch Series title on Nov. 15 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to become the youngest champion in the division's history. Capt. Gordon was very impressed by the young man's ability during the Phoenix weekend. |
