Yesterday, I attended the opening of “The Wright Brothers & The Invention of the Aerial Age”, a two-year exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum featuring 170 artifacts, with its centerpiece the original 1903 Wright Flyer, displayed at eye level for the first time since it was acquired by the Smithsonian in 1948. The exhibit is designed to give the visitor the feeling of stepping back in time to December 17, 1903. Facades of the Wright Brothers' Dayton, Ohio home and their bicycle shop serve as stages for actors performing vignettes which tell the story of the Wrights' adventures. In addition to the pictures below, I was hoping to keep this thread at least partially space-related by photographing "wood and fabric from the 1903 Wright Flyer carried to the moon in 1969 by Apollo 11" as described in the exhibit's press release as part of the gallery. Unfortunately, it was explained by a docent that the doubly-flown artifacts had yet to be installed, so I guess a second visit is in my future. |

The exhibit is on the second floor, just opposite the exit from the Lockheed Martin IMAX theater (and to the right of "Apollo To The Moon". | |
