Democrats have just introduced the Space Exploration Act of 2003 to the U.S. House of Representatives; the author is Nick Lampson of Texas, with 26 co-sponsors. The bill sets a vision and goals for the future of NASA, beyond the Low Earth Orbit of the Space Station and Shuttle, outlining a series of incremental steps for human spaceflight. These include development of reusable spacecraft for carrying people around in the Earth-Moon vicinity, including to the nearby Lagrange points; sending people to an Earth-crossing asteroid; establishing a lunar base, and sending people to Mars with a base on a Martian moon by 2024.

I see that Sheila Jackson Lee is listed as a sponsor.

This is the same Sheila Jackson Lee who, when visiting the Mars Pathfinder Mission Center in 1997, wanted to know if the Mars Pathfinder had taken any pictures of the flag planted by Neil Armstrong in 1969.

At precisely the moment I was reading Robert's message, I heard these familiar words from the TV in my study: "Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The "Eagle" has landed!" A good omen?

Perhaps, out of the tragedy of Columbia, there might be a new focus and a resumption of the upward journey. Here's hoping.

Hi Gene,
I knew someone would bring up the notorious Jackson-Lee flag incident! Haha. Goodness knows I don't agree with her on most things, but as far as this legislation goes, I'm with her. So I perhaps she's a space-challenged Congressperson, but she's OUR space-challenged Congressperson.

I have emailed a letter of support for this legislation to my representative and for a new ambitious mission for NASA. I have also urged, as the Time Magazine article posted elsewhere on collectspace indicates, that we should go back to single-use capsule missions so that we can move once again beyond the boundaries of Earth and go for the moon, mars and beyond.

If you want to join me in getting your voice heard, I urge you to email your representative today!

Here is an easy email loocator link for your rep:

Oh I don't have any problem with the legislation. Hell no. I was just wondering if SJL even knew what she was sponsoring if she didn't even know that men did not land on Mars. Perhaps she wishes to correct the oversight? :-)I wonder if she knows what a Lagrange point is and where to find it?

In fact, come Monday, my Republican buns will be making a call to my Republican Congressman's office in favor of this bill.
Doesn't NASA already do most of this stuff anyway?

Gene
