Beware of an e-mail that purport to come from

contact@collectspace.com

It is a virus acrrier.

DO NOT OPEN IT.

It asks you to open the attached file - usually an exe file that carries a virus or worm bug

Luckily my anti virus caught it this morning .

It it is just one of many of a similar style going around - most which seem to start Re' details.

The virus did not come from contact@collectspace.com.

collectSPACE runs off a Mac OS X server and is edited using a Mac OS X client, both unaffected by the Sobig virus which you have received.

The virus grabs e-mail addresses from several different locations on a computer, including the Windows address book and Internet cache, and sends e-mails to each one. The virus also forges the source of the message using a randomly selected e-mail address so that the infected message appears to come from someone else -- hence the appearance it came from contact@collectspace.com

You can read more about it here:
http://news.com.com/2100-1002_3-5065494.html

It is currently plaguing most of the space industry (I have literally received over 500 copies in the past 24 hours.) It appears that the virus is making its way through NASA as well...

Thank you for ID'ing the SoBig virus. I now understand why I am getting bombarded by emails with either "That movie," 'Details" or "Thank you" as their title.

The virus protection had kicked in, so everything is ok, but I have been deleting mail like mad.

This is the worst epidemic of email viruses I have ever seen. I usually do not get that many (maybe 1 a day on average) and I religiously update my McAfee Viruscan, but I am getting like 50 of these emails a day. This is way worse than many people think.

Here's a story on it:

Scott, count your blessings -- 50 a day is nothing. In the past 24 hours I have received 500 messages with subject lines "RE: Details", "Thank You" and "That movie". Yesterday I spent more time deleting mail then I did answering it...

But you're right -- I have never seen anything like this before...

Robert,
My company was overrun with the "Thank you" and "Details" emails. Our email server was down most of the day. It seemed to effect the PC users more than Mac users like myself.

To save time deleting these virus carrying emails one of my rules is to send ALL emails to the delete box . From there I just highlight the legitimate emails from people I know and subject I know (this after virus checking) .Just drag and drop in to Inbox for keeping these trusted good ones.

All the rets are just deleted from the delete box .

The "good" thing about the Welchia virus is that it destroys the LovSan virus ...
There's ONLY 1 rule = Have an Updated Anti-Virus soft at ALL times

Which one to use ? The best in my opinion :

F-Secure !!!

Hi guys.

Can I suggest to you a partial remedy for this scourge of unwanted e-mails. There is a free program called "Mailwasher" that you can download and it acts as filter between your ISP and your e-mail program. When you go online, you double click the mailwasher icon and it give you all the details of messages that would otherwise be ultimately bound for your inbox, with specifics on sender, title, size of messages etc etc. Operating within that program, you can then elect (other than accepting e-mails of course) to delete and / or bounce what you consider offending messages back to their source and prevent them being loaded into your e-mail application.

Saves an awful lot of time, and the e-mails aren't loaded onto your HDD only then to be subsequently deleted. Only thing I don't know is whether there's a MAC version.
I've been using it for over 12 months and it's terrific.

All times are CT (US)
