Hi All

Just to let you know that in January it is almost 100% certain that Piers Sellers and the ENTIRE Atlantis crew will be in the UK visiting the National Space Centre.

I'll post full details of events and activities and a formal announcement as soon as everything is confirmed because obviously there is the possibilty that things will go pear shaped!

Visit is confirmed. Full itinerary will be posted shortly, but the visit is from 15-22nd Jan and the locations will be National Space Centre, Leicester for certain on the 15th and am 16th, the former being your best day.

Other locations will probably include Bradford Museum of Film, Photography etc, Edinburgh somewhere, Science Museum, and possibly somewhere south of London. These are still being firmed up. Expect a full posting after Christmas.

Ofcourse, I'd like to see everyone come and join us at the Space Centre on the 15th- its a great day out if you haven't yet been!

HI all

Don't get so negative, I told you I'd post the correct info and I will on Monday. However I can tell you that they are here on the 15th and that day is a public day and there is currently a large slot in the afternoon where it is expected that they will be doing public and press things. I will confirm timings.

Don't forget that they will also be at other venues in the UK. I know they are going to the Science Museum and to Bradford to the IMAX there. As I say, I'll try to post the full itinerary on Monday.

TheSTS112 crew will also be in Bradford, West Yorks on the 16th of Jan. The venue is the National Museum of Photograph Film and Television.
http://www.nmpft.org.uk/

There are two talks both followed by IMAX space station films. The first starts at 17.30 and the second at 19.30. The cost is 10 a talk including film.
There is also an airport near Bradford I beleive.
All the best

There will definately be some public time on the afternoon of the 15th at the Space Centre in Leicester. East Midlands Airport is about 30 minutes away by car. As this is the crews first stop, the press contingent is likely to be large and thats why exact timings haven't been given as the press stuff could overrun. But if you're more local to Leicester than the other sites - and i know they're at the science museum but haven't been able to get details of whether there is a public session there - then you may want to come along on the 15th and take a chance. You don't need to book tickets in advance for general admission. For more info www.spacecentre.co.uk

The code for Bradford if you want to phone the National Museum of Film etc is 01274.

I ordered tickets over the phone using my credit card. They only mentioned the 7.30pm
event. Whether there isn't an earlier one, it's restricted or it's full, I don't know.

Look forward to seeing anyone from the group there

Is there any reason why the 16th January appearance in Bradford by the STS-112 crew hasn't made it into the 'Sightings' section?

It's definately on. Anyone out there going to be in attendance?

I'm going to the Edinburgh event on the 18th...from Walsall to Edinburgh but only because I cant make the other dates or they seem to be implying you have to be press or a student. I'm hoping for autographs...will be excited to hear if you try or have luck obtaining any. In any case to meet a whole crew at once will be great!!

Sorry about the Bradford oversight. Its corrected now -- I somehow missed Oliver's initial posting on January 8 and didn't see it until today.

Though I do check the message boards daily (multiple times) it is really helpful if you are promoting a sighting that you e-mail the event information to sightings@collectspace.com in addition to posting it here. Thanks.

Its a pity the National Space Centre never seem to give advanced warning of astronaut visits. I'm an annual pass holder and always find out after the event. I've been on the site today and it doesn't mention the STS 112 visit and I dont believe its to be a public event either. Pinky Nelson visited in December and yet there was no previsit notification. I know autographs will not always be permissable but I enjoy meeting astropeople with or without the opportunity to obtain an autograph. But live in hope too!! Come on National Space Centre!!

Alex said in an earlier post in this thread that 15th January should have a period in the afternoon when the astronauts will be available to the public. I have a family season ticket for the Space Centre and I am hoping my 2 children and my wife, Jill, can come with me to meet the astronauts.

I do agree that it was disappointing the public were not made aware of Dr. Nelson's visit.

Best wishes

NICK they mainly had crew photos with them all except piers not sure about Fyodor had individual photos with them but i do not know how many. i think they had 500 school kids visit them today at Leicester so there stock may have taken a punishing. i had my whos who and shuttle the first 25 years signed as well as pics. itwas mainly a press day with lots of standing around waiting for the press etc during which time they were happy to talk to anyone and everyone.

Just returned from Bradford where I arrived early and in time to 'participate' in the press photo call in the Museum foyer. Got in amongst the press pack(!) and gotsome shots of the crew together and of Piers Sellers who was separated from his crewmates for a time for a few individual shots with the local press due to his connections in this region. I helped a couple of reporters with some info on the astronauts and ended up getting a free ticket into the 5.30pm talk and IMAX film. (I was going to the 7.30 originally!)

I had a brief chat with Jeff Ashby and Dave Wolf and had a slightly longer chat with Piers Sellers.

The crew gave a brief talk in the IMAX theatre and did a Q&A session before the Space Station film was shown. It's stunning!

Due to the brief period between performances and the crew being required for more press work there was no real opportunity to set any photos signed. (I can always send them to JSC !!)

Still, it didn't detract from a great event
and I will get the pics processed as soon as possible.

Regards

Steve

Just to confirm pad leader's words - it was a great afternoon at the National Space Centre in Leicester. A big thank you to the Centre for making a little time for us collectors.

My Who's Who gained 6 more autographs. Being the second edition only Dave Wolf had a biog entry but the book has some lovely blank pages just perfect for signings. My Mir book received two additions, Dave Wolf and Fyodor Yurchikhin (who had worked on the Mir Programme before his selection as a cosmonaut) and Fyodor Yurchikhin also signed Jill's Energia book. I also obtained a crew photo signed by all and 4 individual portraits. For some reason Piers Sellers and Fyodor Yurchikhin did not have individual portraits.

It was very very very very very good and the Space Centre has made sure I will renew my family season ticket. More please.

One nice story from the day was on arrival we were approached by a member of staff. They were looking for a youngster for a press photo shoot with a visiting astronaut and would our daughter Alison be interested. We did not say no. Alison had her photo taken with Piers Sellers and Sir Patrick Moore (who was also there). There is a photo in today's newspaper and thanks to pad leader who lives in the newspapers catchment area a copy will soon be on its way to us.

It is not the first time Alison has been photographed with spacefarers. Over the last few years she has met Alexander Volkov, Richard Gordon, Alexei Leonov, Gerald Carr, Ed Gibson and several others.

STS-112 was a very friendly crew who were happy to talk to and sign for us collectors. I spoke to Jeff Ashby and Dave Wolf. Jill spoke to Fyodor Yurchikhin (both being space stamp collectors) but all too soon it was time for the astronauts to move on.

Role on the next UK astronaut sighting.

Best wishes

Rob Wood

Hey Rob,
stop rubbing salt into my wounds...bad enough for me not to be able to get there but to be included with the press(publicity) and get so many great autographs too!!!...no honestly its great when things go so well. I have younger children too and try to get them included and involved whenever possible.
I'm off at 5.30-6.00 in the morning Edinburgh bound. I hope the astros get the time to be able to sign. With these events they often get whisked away....If anyone else from these pages are in Edinburgh tomorrow afternoon make yourselves known lets put some names to faces..

Just got back from Edinburgh..stopped over night after meeting the STS 112 crew. Great we enjoyed a short lecture to which they all contributed. We were then treated to a short video presentation followed by a Q&A session. The fact that a couple of hundred people then formed an orderly queue for autographs didn't phase them either.A great evening for all concerned.Best wishes to the crew.
Really pleased with the photos I got signed. Also nice to meet with Irish Guy & Eamonn from the emerald isle.

Had great afternoon too in Edinburgh, met up with Irishguy. Most bizarre sight was entire crew departing in a black taxi still wearing their blue NASA flightsuits!Only downer to the weekend was getting home and trying on Musabayev,s Sokol suit he wore to Mir- despite Dave Wolf telling me that afternoon that the Kazakh was my build,it was too small!(and I,m just 5ft.3in.!)So back it went to Alex Panchenko...most interesting thing I heard was of an ozone-like odour from EVA suits following repress, never knew of that. All in all,a great trip to some great people!
