If the weather is reasonable on Sunday, I think I will take the kids across the river to West Point and visit Ed White's grave site.

Please, a prayer for me too.

I remember the visit I did at Arlington National Cemetery on Veteran's Day of 2000. Quite early in the morning, I climbed the small hill where Gus and Roger lay. I was alone there, and stayed for a long while.

Then I went down the hill just in time to get in for the ceremony honored by then president Clinton. The twenty-one cannon shots fired nearby at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier were very moving...

For those interested, there were signs of a number of visitors to Ed White's grave yesterday. I arrived in mid-afternoon and was glad I did not heed the woman in the visitors' center, who stated that the USMA was not allowing people on to the grounds. Someone had already planted a flag to the left of the tombstone at the gravesite and the top of the marker was lined with memory rocks (sorry, unaware of the appropriate term). We spent some time at the grave and the moved around the rest of the cemetery.

The New York Times's weekly SkyWatch piece (compiled by Joe Rao at the Hayden Planetarium) provided the following information about the 37-star gyroscope calibration system that was part of the Apollo navigation program.

"While training in celestial navigation, however, Mr. Grissom quietly incorporated three new names onto NASA's star list: Dnoces, Navi and Regor. In later missions these three maverick stars were accorded the same respect as celebrated ones like Sirius, Vega and Aldebaran. But what did they stand for? As it turns out, Dnoces is the word "second" spelled backward, a reference to the ordinal number often appended to Mr. White's name. Navi was Mr. Grissom's middle name (Ivan) spelled backward, and Regor was Roger Chaffee's first name in reverse. These unofficial names were later incorporated into many star charts and atlases. But, of course, Mr. Grissom had no idea that his celestial jest would turn into a memorial to himself and his crewmates. All three died in a fire that enveloped the Apollo command module 35 years ago today."

The star chart then showed the located of the three stars: Navi in Cassiopeia, Dnoces in Ursa Major and Regor in Vela.

Yes, I found the stars listed on an Apollo 16 LM starchart and starkey. The stars were assigned two digit numbers for input into the guidance computer via the diskey. The numerical codes were Dnoces = #20, Regor = #17 and Navi = #03.

Thank you for finding that story. What issue of the New York Times did the story appear in?

Thanks

I was just in Washington DC so I took the Metro out to Arlington Cemetary and went to Guss and Roger's gravesites. There two bunches of fresh Poinsettias there (no card). I thanked them both for their courage and then made the long walk back down the hill.

Thanks for posting the photos ... I was in Arlington in August 2001 but didn't realize these Apollo 1 crewmembers were buried there!
