The following note was forwarded by historian, author and bibliophile Frederick Ordway concerning the Waverly Auction on November 11, 1999 (sale 159):"For nearly half a century, I have known Frederick C. Durant III as a friend and close collaborator in the rocket, spaceflight and lunar and planetary astronomy fields. Over the years, he has built up an enviable collection of books on these subjects to the point that his library is known internationally for its focus and content.
A rocket engineer and spaceflight activist since 1947, Fred Durant has interacted closely with many luminaries in the field. Arthur C.
Clarke, Wernher von Braun, Eugen Sanger, Walter Dornberger, Charles Lindbergh and many others enjoyed his friendship and enthusiasm, as attested by inscriptions in some of the volumes of this magnificent collection.
I commend Mr. Durant for dispersing his library as he begins to enjoy the fruits of retirement. By so doing, a new generation of collectors will soon add to their libraries choice titles belonging to one of America's most distinguished spaceflight historians. I look forward to spirited bidding at Waverly Auctions
