Can someone explain what happened here? On Dec 16, 1965 GT-VI (Gemini-Titan 6) was recovered by the USS Wasp. Owen Murray reports seeing prime recovery ship (PRS) covers for Wasp on B584, B611, and B613. None are particularly expensive although a B611 sold on eBay in 2013 for $93.

While this Beck (B610) is not on Murray's site does it justify four collectors vying and eventually paying $361? B610 is normally reserved for USS Waldron (as is B585) but we suspect the addressee, who was the Navy rep who sent out the covers, sometimes sent a few to a ship other than where the majority were assigned.

Am I missing something?

David, you're not missing anything. I was also amazed by the price this cover brought. I put in what I thought was a bid towards the top of what it was worth at $92 and would not have been surprised if it had brought a little more. However, I feel that $361 is way too high and must be close to a record.

Skelley was the Navy's coordinator for space covers and as such had access to all of Morris Beck's printed covers. Apparently he procured some crew covers as well as some other covers and sent them to different ships. How he did this with none crew covers I'm not sure as these should all have been pre-addressed. Crew covers, on the other hand, were not addressed and therefore Skelley could easily have addressed a small number to himself and sent them to whatever ship he wanted.

I've been scratching my head about this one myself.

There have now been two more Beck printed covers sold for crazy prices on eBay.

A Gemini 12 Agana Guam postmarked Beck crew cover (item 164829737674) sold for the same amazing $361!!! In addition a Gemini 12 Pago Pago postmarked Beck crew cover (item 154426240076) sold for the same amount, $361!!! Both were addressed to Capt. Peters.

You might remember that approximately a dozen fake Beck covers, sold on eBay during the last year, were also addressed to him. There were several bidders for each cover with two bidders in each case having very deep pockets. My bids of $95 were left in the dust!

All times are CT (US)
