Per the United States Postal Service Postal Bulletin, a USPS pictorial postmark will be available on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018 for the landing of NASA's InSight spacecraft on Mars.
Those who cannot attend the event but who wish to obtain the postmark may submit a mail order request. Pictorial postmarks are available only for the dates indicated, and requests must be postmarked no later than 30 days following the requested pictorial postmark date.

All requests must include a stamped envelope or postcard bearing at least the minimum First-Class Mail postage. Items submitted for postmark may not include postage issued after the date of the requested postmark. Such items will be returned unserviced.

Customers wishing to obtain a postmark must affix stamps to any envelope or postcard of their choice, address the envelope or postcard to themselves or others, insert a card of postcard thickness in envelopes for sturdiness, and tuck in the flap. Place the envelope or postcard in a larger envelope and address it to: Pictorial Postmarks, followed by:

Mission on Mars Station
Postmaster
600 Lincoln Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91109-9998
Customers can also send stamped envelopes and postcards without addresses for postmark, as long as they supply a larger envelope with adequate postage and their return address. After applying the pictorial postmark, the Postal Service returns the items (with or without addresses) under addressed protective cover.

Knowing I was going to be at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the InSight landing, I brought with me an appropriate stamp, a blank cover and sourced at JPL a decal to create a cachet with the intention of having it serviced with the pictorial postmark.

On the morning of Nov. 26, I went to the Pasadena post office on Lincoln Ave., but was turned away, as the clerk said they did not do hand cancels at that office (and had no idea about the pictorial postmark). So the next day, I put the cover I created into the mail, following the USPS instructions, with a note asking for the pictorial postmark.

Instead, as you can see, I received back a date stamp (though I suppose nicely in red, given the connection to Mars).

But I don't understand what I did wrong that I did not get the pictorial postmark. Has anyone received the postmark?

What is wrong with this country when counter personnel decline to postmark hand back service? SAD.

Very unfortunate Robert that the postal clerk you saw didn't know anything about the special Mars pictorial cancel strike. Did you ask to see the postmaster or OIC in charge?

Anyway, my supply of InSight Mars landing covers at JPL/Pasadena with the special postmark on Nov. 26th are due any day now. I also have InSight launch day covers as well here from VAFB if anyone is interested.

By the way, Robert, I love your decal sticker-used cachet for the occasion; very well done. I've been a long-time user of decal stickers as cover cachets for decades now.

Thanks Ken. This was my first time creating my own cover, and my first time requesting a pictorial postmark through the mail, so I am a tad disappointed that it came back as such.

At the Pasadena post office, the postmaster wasn't due in for a few more hours (I got there at opening) and I had to leave to go cover the landing.

Setting aside that the clerk did not know about the pictorial postmark, why wasn't it applied when I mailed in my request? I sent it to the address listed above and followed the USPS directions. Is it common for pictorial postmark requests to be overlooked and fulfilled with just a date stamp?

Unfortunatley this has happened to me more often than not recently.

Half the time they refuse to just hand it back and force it to go through the mail which is best case considering other times they just plain say NO. I even had a worker ask "what do you mean by a hand cancel?" I explained and pointed to the device they just used for the prior customer on their registered mail form and then still got a no for a hand back. I've had to adjust my cachets accordingly to avoid overlapping with machine applied barcodes.

Robert, although your cover has not the pictorial postmark, it is really excellent. Good job.

Decal sticker and stamp are very appropriate. And RED postmark (yes, RED as Mars planet) from Pasadena creates an unique cover. Please, if it is your first created space cover, follow with this for next missions. And... I would like to have one like this.

Thanks Antonio! Future events and postmarks — and encouraging words like yours and Ken's — may very well inspire me to try again.

Robert, for general cancels the USPS has something called hand-back service. It is actually in the USPS handbook and states that the postal clerk must provide this service for any one who requests it. However, not all clerks are aware of this.

When my dad visits a new place, he always looks up the local post office and will go to have a couple of covers cancelled to commemorate his visit. He also has a small spiral postcard type book and puts a stamp on the blank side for a cancel. He has done this for many years. Sometimes he gets resistance from the postal clerk but most are accommodating. He usually tells them he is a collector and asks if they would hit their date stamp on a couple of items.

But this doesn't quite explain why you had trouble with the special cancel for the landing. Possibly the clerk knew nothing about it or the cancel simply wasn't at that location. The postmaster should have known if you had had a chance to speak with them. Your cover looks great though! Still an appropriate cancel for the event.

Thanks Eddie. I'm happy with the cover as is, but my whole plan in creating it was to obtain the pictorial cancel, so it just leaves me wondering what happened.

It will be interesting if others receive the pictorial cancel or the date stamp...

And I think your father's idea for a passport-like book for local post offices is great!

Robert- What I do when sending for pictorial cancels is to write on the mailing envelope the cancel requested with the date of the cancel. This way the request gets routed to the ones actually doing the cancels.

Robert - the cancels are available for 30 days - send another request and since it is not "launch day" it will be routed to the right person.

Just send your envelope and a SASE - I add a post-it note on the envelope requesting the pictorial cancel.

I added a note inside the envelope, but adding it to the outside is a good idea, thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't have another of the decals and I am out of Mars stamps to try again. I just hope others get the pictorial postmark in response to their requests.

For my cover I decided to add the InSight boarding pass graphic as a cachet and received back a nice pictorial postmark on it.

Would love to see what others have done with their cachets.
