I'm interested in sending a batch of covers for service but I'm unfamiliar with the requirements for processing and return shipping from Austria.

Such as, how do I go about getting Austrian stamps for return postage? Does anyone have some tips on how I can do this?

You can buy Austrian stamps from the Austrian postal service.

You need to send your covers within 14 days of the cancellation date (27 Jan) to the Philatelic Service for cancellation:

Österreichische Post AG, Philatelie, Steinheilgasse 1, 1210 Wien, Austria.
You can also contact the organizers to inquire about cacheted covers but I hear they are not cheap. There will also be rocket flown covers for sale. Just ask Miri. Hope this helps.

"At the last minute" so-to-speak the USPS did authorize a 50th anniversary pictorial postmark for Cape Canaveral (32920) in observance of the Apollo 1 crew.

The special hand anniversary cancellation was suggested by a member of the Roger Chaffee family about a week or so before the Jan. 27th fire tragedy memorial.

Postal headquarters, in an attempt to honor the cancel request, had it approved and is now available at the Cape Canaveral Post Office (CCPO). Requests can be mailed to CCPO directly or be mailed to my firm, SpaceCoast Cover Service, 570 Sunset Lakes Dr., Merritt Island, FL 32953, with postmark-cancel instructions along with a suitable return SASE if the cancelled covers themselves are not to be mailed out directly from the Cape post office.

There are two different color cachet covers that should be available by my firm this week (scans to come).

Just to add to Ken's post above: When mailing to the Cape Postmaster, the address is:

Cape Canaveral Station Apollo 1 50th Anniv.
Postmaster
8700 Astronaut Blvd.
Cape Canaveral, FL 32920-9998

Be sure to include a stiff card inside the covers to be cancelled. Per the recent announcement in the USPS Postal bulletin, the deadline for sending in covers for cancellation has been extended from the normal 30 days from the date of the postmark, to 90 days.

Current cachet covers now available for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 1 (AS-204) tragedy in memorial of the first manned Apollo astronaut crew. Email for more information on them or if interested in purchasing any of the cover issues.

There is also a second set of Apollo 1 covers, all of which, have an original Jan. 27, 1967 cancel involved.

Top cover is one of 40 official KSC-NASA rubber stamp cachet issues by the on-base KSC postal unit. The blue rubber stamp at bottom left was meant to be used on all the requested philatelic mail for the Apollo 1 (AS-204) spaceflight launch from Kennedy/CCAFS, scheduled for late Feb. 1967. At the time of the tragic spacecraft fire, the special cachet impression had not been officially released to the public.

All times are CT (US)
