If price were not an issue, what three space covers would you choose? My choices: - Apollo 11 cover carried to the lunar surface, e.g. the ones carried by Buzz Aldrin that appear occasionally at auction.
- Cover autographed by the second group of astronauts, chosen in l962 (rarer than the Original Seven). When did you last see one of these?
- Lake Champlain recovery cover for Al Shepard's flight.
What do you think? |

Once again, great thread Dave! I'm going to let my X-15 fanatacism show through here: - An X-15 flown cover. There were a few covers flown on 5 - 10 of the flights. Any of them would do for me...
- A Mike Adams auto'd X-15 cover. Adams only flew 7 missions and died on the 7th as he was completing his only astronaut wings flight. A terribly rare signature to find, and especially on a cover.
- A June 8, 1959 X-15 first free-flight cover. I have never seen one or talked with any collector who has. Crossfield told me that he thinks he carried maybe a half dozen covers on this flight, but can't remember who they went back to. If these still exist, they may be the only (flown or unflown) covers canceled for this flight.

My three: - Even though it would be maybe 1/5 as valuable, I think I'd rather have an Apollo 15 flown cover than an Apollo 11 one. It's pretty well accepted (Buzz is silent on the subject) that the Apollo 11 flown covers ("Carried to the moon on Apollo 11") were stored in the CM and weren't carried to Tranquility Base. The Apollo 15 covers (wonderfully done) were without question carried to the moon's surface.
- A cover signed by all 12 moonwalkers (a photo would also do).
- A cover signed by all 12 X-15 pilots. It's possible that such an item would exist, but very unlikely that there are any signed by all 12.

My favorites are: - Official Apollo 11 cover postmarked during flight.
- Official Apollo 15 cover postmarked on the moon.
- Kamanin's letter, which was delivered to Vladimir Shatalov onboard Soyuz 4 by Soyuz 5 cosmonauts Yevgeni Khrunov and Aleksei Yelisejev in January 1969. It is the earliest cover known to be flown on a manned space mission. Only two letters and a few photographs were delivered. This very letter was sold for some 110,000.00 US $ on the first Sothebee's auction on Soviet space memorabilia.
- Flown Apollo 16 cover. Charly Duke took 25 covers with LM Orion to moon surface. They were exposed to the vacuum of space during 3 EVAs done by John Young and Charlie Duke. The two astronauts drove with LRV-2. All Apollo 16 covers are properly registered in Charlie's PPK list. To the best of my knowledge, only on Apollo 16 covers were flown to moon, which were cancelled right on launch-day at KSC.
- Cover flown to moon onboard Apollo 11 in CSM Columbia.

Do not forget a Randolph Gemini 4 cover signed by Gus Grissom. I only saw two of them in the last 22 years. |

I have been focusing my attention on cosmonauts and mostly Russian covers lately. I greatly enjoy their colorful cachets, pictures and stamps. I have changed to covers because of this and they are much easier to store and display. A signed crew cover for Soyuz 11 would be great, and a signed cover of the first group of cosmonauts wouldnt be bad either. It would be very interesting to have a cover signed by Werhner von Braun and Sergei Korolev. |

Is this true? Apollo 11 covers were not carried to surface? |

214 covers were carried to the moon and I believe were not flown to the surface. However, a master-die was landed in the LM and used to cancel the covers after splashdown. |

Since I wasn't around for the original list, I'll add mine (sorry I couldn't stop at 3). - MR-3 USS Lake Champlain Crew cover signed by the ship's Commanding Officer (Does such a cover exist?)
- Cover (or photo) signed by the entire STS-51L crew
- Cover (or photo) signed by the entire STS-107 crew
- Apollo 11 Flown to the Moon (or at least orbited the Moon) cover
- ELDO F.1 cover from Woomera and signed by the launch team
The only one I have much chance of affording is 5) if it ever comes on the market. |

Were the Apollo 11 covers intended to be flown to the moon's surface and left in the Command Module by mistake? |

Apollo 11 astronauts listed and carried their covers in their CM-PPKs. Thus they were not intended to land on the moon.Only the following covers landed on lunar surface: - 100 Sieger covers on Apollo 15
- 298 Scott covers on Apollo 15
- 25 astronauts covers on Apollo 16
- 3 covers with hand-painted illustration by Bill Hanson on Apollo 16.
The 28 Apollo 16 covers were exposed to the vaccum of space during moonwalks. Apollo 15 covers were vacuumed and well packed. |

Here are my three (though two are sets): - Complete set of space shuttle launch and landing covers
- Complete set of Project Mercury 4¢ stamp first day covers from the original post offices where they were first offered
- STS-8 cover flown on the middeck (one of 1,000) and signed by the entire crew
Through the generosity of cS members, I have been able to obtain half of the first set (launch covers) and a good sampling of the second set. |

Just came over this topic, opened some 13 years ago! It really interesting to learn what are the dreams of experienced collectors. I have a long wish-list, but only one cover that I can give a status of "desire" — ASTP flown cover. As far, as I know, 25 were taken abroad Soyuz by Valery Kubasov. I heard about one that was sold on auction. From the wish-list, the first several positions are: - ATV flown cover with ISS marks and crew signatures.
- ASTP recovery cover from USS New Orleans with the date earlier then July 25, 1975.
- ASTP recovery cover with signature of Rear Admiral Ralph Wentworth
- Krylov tracking ship cover postmarked in Seattle during visit in 1992 – Resurs 500 project
- Operation Moonlight, Yellowknife cover – Cosmos satellite remnants search in 1978

I have yet to meet my goal of obtaining the desired covers I listed in my post several years ago, but the post by cS member fimych above got me looking in my own collection of ASTP covers. Unfortunately, except for one scarce cover, the recovery covers are all postmarked in either San Francisco or Norfolk. An ASTP cover dated 7/24/75 aboard the PRS USS New Orleans is basically nonexistent, as the ship's post office was closed to both the crew and public (reporters, dignitaries etc.). But the mission did produce a wide variety of covers, due to it being the last manned flight to end at sea before shuttle. In fact, some enterprising collectors and dealers arranged for covers to be postmarked on board the PRS on each day of the mission (except the 24th), so a mostly complete collection of event covers from the flight can be had with some patience and diligent searching. |

I wasn't collecting covers when this thread was originally started. So I hope the community will indulge me with my three choices. Two are seen often and my lack of them in my collection is a function of budget. - Signed Neil Armstrong X-15 Cover
- Type 3 Apollo 11 Insurance cover
- Signed Flown Soyuz T-15 cover

Yes, and there exists flown Apollo 12 covers (moon orbit only) - but they were taken on another mission! Apollo 12 CMP Dick Gordon prepared 87 covers, but for some reason they were left behind on Earth. Almost two years later, Apollo 15 LMP Jim Irwin took along Gordon's covers, and Gordon made a notation on each that they were flown to the moon on 15. All were signed by the Apollo 12 crew and had a postmark for the date they left quarantine in Houston. |

This post is confusing. The master-die carried to the lunar surface was used to create the First Man on the Moon stamp. It was not used to cancel covers after splashdown. |
