Ooooh, not to be negative, but does that vertical ascent profile remind anybody else of a launchpad abort scenario?

Additionally from Shane Kimbrough:

The 5 large stars represent the 5 partner space agencies cooperating in the ISS program.

Just wondering, it occurred to me that Hoshide is written using Latin letters.

Given that the Crew Dragon will (in theory) eventually be taking Russians, and one would assume people from other non Latin letter using countries, are there plans afoot for the SpaceX crew patches to start using Kanji or Cyrillic symbols/letters for crew from these sort of countries? After all, Soyuz mission patches use Kanji, Latin and Cyrillic.

When Jorge and I designed the Expedition 23 patch we were instructed to put Noguchi in English. I expect this was a similar request by Hoshide.

Some SpaceX artwork for Crew-1 has Soichi in Japanese, I am not sure if they were official or fan-made artwork, though. I've only seen replica patches use it, the official patch does not.

SpaceX's artwork for its Crew-1 patch used the Japanese for Noguchi's name. The company's embroidered patch switched to the English transliteration.

Description of the crew (NASA) patch from NASA (via Instagram):
The Crew-2 patch is a beautiful design that represents the second crew rotation flight with astronauts aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, hence the number "2" featured towards the bottom of the patch.

Commander of the mission, astronaut Shane Kimbrough, said, "The determined expression of the Dragon reflects the strength of the team and their contribution to the exploration of space." He also shared the meaning of the five stars featured in the center of the patch. He said they represent the five space agencies cooperating in the International Space Station (ISS) program: NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Roscosmos.

The Crew Dragon spacecraft on the right represents the vehicle that will house the crew until they reach the space station.

The names surrounding the design represent these four crew members: Commander Shane Kimbrough and Pilot Megan McArthur of NASA, Mission Specialist Thomas Pesquet (ESA), and Mission Specialist Akihiko Hoshide (JAXA).

I received the Crew-2 patch with A-B Emblem date code 02/21 40, Made in China. However, the colours are much more brilliant, with the dragon's darker colour real red and not orange compared to the photos here and on A-B's website. Rather the colour-combination red-orange instead of orange-sand.

Is that correct? Is there a difference between manufactured in USA and in China?

Yes Dietrich, I have just checked my SpaceX Crew-2 patches and you are quite right. The patches manufactured in China (02/21 40 and 04/21 40) are slightly different and are a brighter orange and red than the ones manufactured at Weaverville, N.C.

This should not happen as the colours of the threads used in either the USA or China production runs should be identical.

Could you please post a side-by-side scan of both versions for a direct comparison? My China-made patch is quite different from the published photos, but the difference might be less in reality.

As I live in Germany and got the patch from a local dealer, it is not so easy to complain. Are you able to order from A-B specifying which manufacturing you want to receive?

Which version would be considered authoritative? Does NASA mix both provenances in their official use?

No you are not able to specify which patch manufacturer or date code you would like to receive from AB Emblem. (I have tried on a number of occasions to request certain patches). But unfortunately it's a game of chance as to what you receive. But for current and new patches like the SpaceX Crew-2 you are more likely to receive the "Made In USA" version, as the "Made In China" versions are kept back in their sealed packs of 10 and sold to their agents, retail sellers and other outlets that way. Also it is down to supply and demand as well.

AB Emblem usually supplies NASA and their direct employees from the early production runs manufactured at Weaverville, N.C. Rarely from patches made in China or Taiwan or Mexico.

Here are the side by side comparisons: The top two patches are Made In USA and the bottom two are Made In China. The difference in the red and orange shades are more distinct or noticeable looking at the real patches in good daylight.

The AB Emblem Made In USA and Made In China SpaceX Crew-2 patches shown above have now been added with a comparison slider tool to the SpaceX Patch List at about patch 564/565.

This now shows the stitching on the capsule, the exhaust, and the dragon's tongue to appear to be the biggest modifications between the USA and China manufactured versions, as well as the red, the orange and the light blue coloured threads used.
