I recently picked up five red, white and blue space shuttle triangle patches (see example below). I would like to know if anyone might know how many named versions exist?

Currently Identified:

  • Space Shuttle Vandenberg Launch Team
  • Space Shuttle Kennedy Launch Team Member
  • Space Shuttle Contractor Employee
  • Space Shuttle Booster Recovery Team
  • Space Shuttle Launch Spectator
  • Space Shuttle Landing Viewer

There are two distinct sets of these red, white and blue triangular patches. The original set of six was released in the 1990s (I don't remember the source) and are easily identified by an older style of embroidery using lush, shiny silk-like thread (the white background is applied in opposing diagonal waves pointing upwards). These are the six listed and shown above. As far as I know, they were limited edition souvenir versions offered through the mail (maybe by Cargo Bay Emblems/Randy Wagner?).

In the 2002-2003 time frame, Randy Hunt released a new set in this same size/style, but using an Asian manufacturer with adequate but noticeably cheaper sewing. This set included the above six patches and the following new patches:

  • Space Shuttle First Woman Pilot Eileen M. Collins
  • Space Shuttle First Woman CMDR Eileen M. Collins
  • Space Shuttle Vandenberg Launch Team Member
    (adding the new last word)
  • Space Shuttle Enterprise 1978
  • Space Shuttle Columbia 1981
  • Space Shuttle Challenger 1983
  • Space Shuttle Discovery 1984
  • Space Shuttle Atlantis 1985
  • Space Shuttle Endeavour 1992
Both of these sets are shown in the photo below. Sorry for the weird orientation of some patches, but they're part of a wall-size artsy bulletin board collage.

Anyone know of any additional versions?

I think the first set was out in the mid 80's. I think I remember seeing them from Apollo Pictures out of Florida from the old Countdown magazine.

Wow, Thanks for the quick responses. And for the surprises... After I posted, I remembered the women patches, but those about the orbital vehicles, whew, I do not recall seeing those out there before. But now I have a new target to look for to keep the collecting going and the patch-hound well fed and back on the hunt!
