Entertaining design for 53, with simplified representations of Sputnik and the ISS in orbit about the Earth, which itself is inside a 'house' of stars. ISS Expedition 53 mission patchThe International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 53 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz MS-04 in September 2017. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-06. Expedition 53 will be commanded by Roscosmos cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin. His crewmates, all flight engineers, include: Roscosmos cosmonauts Aleksandr Skvortsov and Ivan Vagner, Jack Fischer and Scott Tingle of NASA and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli. |

At first glance it's a really catchy design. I think it is a little heavy on the stars, and secondly, is this an Earth-centric Solar System? What's going on with those planetary orbits? I understand that they are stylized but they are just confusing. The roman numerals are cleverly integrated and the shape of the patch is distinct. The sun is beautiful. |

The slogan used by Fedor Yurchkhin for this design is "Earth is our home."Some time ago there was in Moscow an exhibition of Fedor's photos of the Earth he did during his previous flight with the same stars-home on the logo. Maybe somebody has the logo of the exhibition to share... I know the Sputnik came from the logo of Energia corporation where Fedor worked during all his career after graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institut-MAIin 1983. |

Designed by Luc van den Abeelen together with Fedor Yurchikhin. I have a special relationship with the emblem too: last November, just one day before the crew were expected to submit their design to NASA JSC, I volunteered to draw the detailed vectorized version that was — unexpectedly already — needed. An interesting 24 hours. Very close inspection of the artwork will reveal a couple of small imperfections - you now know why. |

The original artwork that Fedor submitted to NASA, even had a couple more stars, which made the 'house' stand out a little bit better! There was also a large white star in the lower left corner, but NASA clearly ruled that stars can not be seen in front of the Moon. |

The stars make much more sense with the context of the other artwork. |

At about the time the design was first posted here last March, I saw a scan of one of the test versions made by AB Emblem.Weird thing was that the embroidery did not follow the original design: the stars seemed to have been placed randomly. As a result, the outline of the house could no longer be recognized and the "Earth is our home"-theme was lost. I do not know if this has been solved in the final patch: I have not seen it anywhere yet. |

So, here it is! The randomly placed stars are gone and even though it is still a little bit of a variation, the house-pattern as seen in the official design can be easily recognized. It is a very nice patch.Especially for Kevin: embedded label, 263544 "Made in USA" 7/16/20. |

Many thanks again Erik. Update 20-02-17: A second patch design number and date code has come to light for this Expedition 53 original six crew names patch. It is patch design 263344 instead of 263544, and 8/16/20 instead of 7/16/20 (as shown above). |

Very nice, as mentioned above I too thought the amount of stars made the design look very messy, too much going on. Seeing the patch though I've changed my opinion. I really like it, something original. Excellent design that looks better as a patch. |

Tim and Jorge; I think STS-129 is one of my favorite shuttle mission patch designs, but now with ISS-53, it's another favorite emblem design (top five) of all the Expedition crews. Well done guys and keep up the excellent graphic design work! |

I keep wondering when the sixth crew member is going to be named? It sure seems like a short time before a late 2017 launch date, unless an experienced or recently flown crew member is added? |

The third crew member on MS-06 is Joseph Acaba and his backup is Shannon Walker, reports TASS. U.S. astronaut Joseph M. Acaba will fly to the International Space Stations (ISS) as a third crew member of the Soyuz MS-06 spaceship. His flight will be financed by Russia’s Rocket and Space Corporation Energia as debt repayment to US’ Boeing under the joint project Sea Launch, a source in the Russian space industry told TASS on Monday."Joseph Acaba has been appointed as a member of the main crew of the Soyuz MS-06 spaceship due to be launched to the International Space Station on September 13. Shannon Walker has been appointed as a member of backup crew. Most likely, she will be subsequently chosen as a main crew member of the Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft due to fly to the ISS in March 2018," the source said. |

The product design numbers and date codes used on this revised six crew name version patch for the Expedition 53 are; 276488 Made In USA 04/17/20 275488 Made In USA 4/17/20 275488 Made In USA 5/17/20 275488 Made In USA 8/17/20 275488 Made In USA 9/17/20There has also one been found with product design number 276488 Made In USA 04/17/20 date code. The P/D number is probably an error (6 used instead of 5), but the date code is correct. (This patch has also been signed by Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli.) |

The Expedition 53 patches have now been found with patch design number 247766 Made In USA 8/17/20 date code, (right patch), instead of 275488 (left patch) and 276488 (signed patch above). So far 17 of these error patches have been found in 2 packs of 25 patches. A similar error appeared on the Expedition 47 patches with patch design number 226655 being the error one and 242279 being the correct one. (The error 226655 is only found with date code 02/2016.) I see AB Emblem is now selling these Expedition 53 patches in packets of 25 again (instead of packets of 10), at $109 per pack of 25. Product No. 25XEXP53. This has not been repeated with ISS-54 and ISS-55 patch packets, they are back in packs of 10 patches. |

It looks like AB Emblem's sales department have made an error and are selling the wrong version of the Expedition 53 patch. Instead of selling the six crew names version, (275488) they are currently (December and January orders and sales), selling the five crew names version (269408). So far two packs of 10 patches have been reported to me by sellers / agents. One with date code 12/1620 and the other with 1/17/20. (This one has the darker green Earth, a colour error). I have managed to acquire a few examples from both of these packets. (There are no labels or stickers on the cellophane packets). Update: I have found and bought another full pack of 10 of these patches. It is a mixed packet, 7 x 12/1620 and 3 x 1/17/20. |

Many thanks for that information Liem.So it is looking like the AB Emblem sales department are unaware that they are still selling the Expedition 53 (5 crew names) 269408 patches. There are no labels or stickers on the cellophane packets used to pack these patches in. |
