Anyone know of Apollo 11 carried any embroidered patches? I have one that came from Deke Slayton's office, but no supporting documentation to back up where it came from originally.

You can get information on crew patches at Chris Spain's Crew Patch reference guide.

Groovy! I had completely forgotten about his site. And according to the info there, Apollo 11 did carry some embroidered patches. And my patch seems to be one from Texas Art Embroidery, the only ones available to be flown and supplied only to the crew and NASA personal.

So that answer's one question. Now if I can find a photo of Deke Slayton in his office with my patch on the wall.

In fact I probably need to amend my site to remove that statement. Although I seem to remember seeing examples claimed as flown I haven't been able to dig up any references.

I would say in the case of your example it can't ever be positively identified as flown since Deke didn't note it as such.

I agree with Chris. After Deke passed away his wife disposed of his collection. She would sell ASTP patches that she knew had flown with a small COA. I imagine she would have done the same thing an Apollo 11 patch.

It is also germane to point out that according to their website, the Apollo 11 patches that were available from Michael Collins at Novaspace have all been sold.

Using this old thread to return to the subject of embroidered patches flown on the Apollo 11 mission...

The upcoming Heritage auction features a presentation to Chris Kraft which incorporates a US flag and a Universal Commemorative Apollo 11 patch, both of which are explicitly identified as having been carried on the mission in the Lunar Module Eagle.

Although I may have missed some, this is the first concrete example of an Apollo 11 flown embroidered mission patch that I'm aware of.

Interesting that it's a Universal Commemorative rather than a Texas Art Embroidery version. Quite a few UC patches have been sold from the Armstrong family collection over the last few years although there was no indication that he had necessarily acquired the patches at the time of the mission.

All times are CT (US)
