I've just seen this illustration on a USS Yorktown "Fighting Lady Family-Gram" from December 1968 (on eBay) as an alternative to the Apollo 8 recovery ship patch.
A good simple patch with a Christmas theme for the time of year of the mission. A pity it's in black and white, as I think it would look good in colour.
In all the time I've been saving recovery ships patches I've never seen this design as a patch or as an illustration.

I have just found this badge (on eBay, as above) and wondered if it is original to the time of Apollo 8 recovery in December 1968 or possibly created at a later date? Either way it's a great piece but wanted to understand more.
I am on the look for genuine Apollo 8 recovery patches, part of an article I am writing.

This patch was created at a later date. The main part of my collecting is devoted to Apollo 8, and I do not know of an Apollo 8 recovery patch.

I believe the late Randy Hunt did a series of modified vessel logo patches with recovery text. Some are documented on the crewpatches.com site.
